    We are to keep the temple of God holy, and be good stewards of that temple. Our body is that temple and both drinking and smoking destroy that temple. But it’s debatable if it’s a direct sin. Alcoholism definitely is.

    Scripture doesn’t condemn drinking as such but it does have a lot to say about drunkenness and about how our actions can be perceived (positivity or negatively) or cause stumbling blocks for others.

    I am free in Christ to enjoy a glass of adult beverage but if I know that’s going to harm the person or people I’m with then love tells me to self-limit my freedom in that specific situation. So if I’m out with or around someone I know is a recovering alcoholic or someone who truly and deeply believes that ALL alcohol drinking is sinful then I’m not going to hoist a glass and pontificate on my Biblical freedoms. Being a Christian isn’t just about freedom it’s also about responsibility and accountability, and charity (love). ??‍♂️

    Same deal with smoking. It’s not healthy and will harm you but it’s not going to send you to hell if you do it (I don’t but I also have asthma so smoking has never been attractive to me lol). But if you were around me I would hope that your love for me as a brother in Christ would move you to either not smoke or to go to another area to smoke and then come back.

    We are to stay sober & some can’t drink just a glass of wine. Then alcohol can make you do crazy stuff. Smoking isn’t good for our bodies, (temple) that holds our souls & spirits.
    Can you honestly say, “yeah that’s the girl for me! Love how she reeks of tobacco & alcohol.” Same for guys. Anything can be bad in excess. Food etc. We are the Bride of Christ. White linen, pure & fresh. Don’t want alcohol & cigarette stains on that linen. We are to be Christ like. Can you imagine Jesus chain smoking or fallen down drunk?

    You will need to understand that the body God has given to you is for his use here. If you do anything that may destroy it or dedicate to it for other uses rather than Himself seek to destroy it therefore provoke God.

    We are strangers here. Our real man is the spirit man inside who has been given this physical body to express himself on earth.

    Visualise this, USA sends an astronaut to planet Mars and is controlled from NASA control room. He must keep his space suit pure and in order or else destroying it may lose Communication with his mother earth, never to be seen again and perish on Mars. It is the the same with us here. If we engage in things that will make us independent of God like being drunk or cigarettes that develop lung cancers then are shortening out life span here and are getting into the world that does not know God to perish.

    Cigarette is not in the Bible but you sin when you smoke it because it destroys the body which we must be responsible. Drinking wine is not a sin but when you are a drunkard you sin. As Paul told Timothy to drink wine for health purposes. Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial. Even ordinary foods we intake can be a sin when we intake a lot of it to be glutton.

    Ingesting toxins that are harmful to your body is disrespectful to yourself and the Holy Spirit. Smoking is almost always started by peer pressure and the desire to be cool in your click. This is fear of not fitting it and trying to please others at your own expense. You body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and fornication is a sin against your own body. Fornication is a desire and loyalty to something that is above your live and loyalty to God. And I trust most smokers are more devoted to putting money and time into their habit, then to seeking God and giving time and money to the ministries of God.
    Drinking I think is ok in moderation, a glass of wine is good for the heart and a can a beer can be good for the soul. But agian several beers and drinking often is not good for your body or your relationships. The bible lists being drunkard along side other sins that involve not being morally healthy.

    If you feel convicted by the Holy Spirit then for you it is sin. But it’s not that cut and dry for everyone to say it’s always a sin or not.

    “For a man is not defiled by what goes into his mouth, but by what comes out of it.”

    If drinking causes us to sin then it should be avoided. If it causes another to stumble then we should abstain in their presence. But it’s not as simple as drinking alcohol is a sin no matter what. Everyone has their own faith journey.

    True our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, but smoking a cigarette isn’t that much more harmful than eating fast food every day of your life.

    You have to separate your questions. Nowhere in scripture says drinking is a sin. It actually supports the opposite. Now smoking is not dealt in scripture. I can say that smoking (as well as drinking in excessive) can become sinful if 1) Gives you bad health 2) you become addictive 3) you become a stumbling block to others. Other than that, I’m tempted to say like Spurgeon once said “I intend to smoke a good cigar to the glory of God before I go to bed tonight.”

    Alcohol is not a sin. The Bible calls it a “doubtful disputation” over which Christians are not allowed to divide. The stronger brother can drink, as long as he doesn’t offend a weaker brother. The weaker brother cannot drink because he is not fully convinced in his own mind, but cannot judge the stronger brother. See Romans 14.

    Smoking? I honestly can’t find much that would say it is specifically sinful, however as it may damage others around us (and for pregnant women, it actually harms the child), that might be a sin. There’s also the fact that Christians are supposed to have self control, which smoking diminishes as it is addictive. If we are not to be mastered by anything, yet even one cigarette can master us, cigarettes are problematic at best.

    In our lockdown in South Africa, alcohol and cigs are banned. When they opened 2 days ago for alcohol the ques were endless.. People are fighting, taking govt to court for cigs. Did they do that for church? So in this instance I would say people idolize these and say they cannot live without it. Would you call it a sin then?

    Cigarettes(tobacco and nicotine along with other toxic substances) are mind altering. You get a high. Feeling good isn’t bad. But the benefits are slim to none. There is no health benefit. Alcohol is a poison. Drinking it provides little benefit. Causes more harm than good. It also is a mind altering substance. As we are the temple of God we must keep our minds clear and our bodies healthy. Our life is a gift from God. We should maintain what God has gifted us. The Bible says don’t consume any unclean thing. Nothing about cigarettes are clean. Then we can go into drinking soda, or consuming any processed sugars, or foods. We must be good stewards of our body.

    We go to the beach for entertainment even though we could be killed in a wreck, drown in a riptide, get struck by lightning, get skin cancer, or even stricken by a marine animal.

    I used to be addicted to smoking since I was in my teens. As I began to smoke more and more, my cough got bad. I guess the Holy Spirit prompted me that this is my problem for being having ARS or know is URTI last time. I couldn’t but I did continue to pray about it for months. One day I made a stand and said a prayer to help me quit. Praise God i successfully done it with Gods deliverence. Its has been 8 yrs and I have not touched smoking. I read this verse many times and thought about it. 1 Cor 10:23 which says I can do anything but is everything benefits. I guess I had the free will to stop or continue. I choose the stop. Its about the choices we make I guess. I still have othet areas of my life to deal with. Togather with God, I believe his will be done on my life. Just my 2 cents. God bless and I am glad to be here to learn apologetics..?

    For ciggarate maybe its because its destroy the body which is the temple of God but for beer I don’t think its sin but what may come out of it can lead to sin. Many have died, jailed and got sick due to alcohol. But alcohol in itself I don’t think its a sin

    Here is just below is just one e-mail about the use of alcohol. There is other e-mails covering the other verses about alcohol in the Bible. I highly recommend signing up for these e-mails as it has really helped me understand these issues of understanding some seemingly contradictory sayings in the Bible.

    Memory is not always a good thing. It may remember problems you had today or recall bad news you heard about tomorrow. It may remind you about bills that are coming due and the limited funds available to pay them. It may dwell on threats made by enemies.

    Unless there is something immediately at hand to do, these thoughts can be disturbing, disruptive, and distracting. But the Creator God ordained a drink or two that temporarily dull the memory and give cheer and peace. He approved moderate use of mood-altering chemicals. In current practice, there are antidepressants and similar drugs that can help.

    Here is advice to King Lemuel from his mother (Pr 31:1-2). She warned him about the dangers of women and alcohol (Pr 31:3-7), exhorted him to use his authority to rescue the poor from injustice (Pr 31:8-9), and gave him a detailed description of the perfect wife (31:10-31). She understood his greatest temptations and greatest opportunities for good.

    She was a wise woman that saw the threats to her son’s success and yet did not overreact with foolish extremes or sentimental nonsense. She was nothing like the silly women of the Temperance Movement in America (II Tim 3:6-7; Is 3:12). It is a great honor to a woman when she is known for objective truth, especially God’s truth, and not emotional extremes or heresies. Abigail and Ruth were such wise women (I Sam 25:3; Ruth 3:11).

    The previous proverb suggested a good use for wine and strong drink – to help those with heavy hearts, who feel overwhelmed by their circumstances (Pr 31:6). The commentary on that verse will help much with this verse, since they are closely connected. God made wine to gladden the heart, and it is godly wisdom to understand this fact and use alcohol in moderation for a person’s cheer and peace (Judges 9:13; Ps 104:14-15; Eccl 10:19).

    Consider the value of the Bible. The great God of heaven, Who must humble Himself to consider things in heaven or earth, cares about your daily thoughts and troubles. He is concerned if you have a heavy heart; He wants you to be glad, relax, and enjoy life (Ps 127:2; Eccl 9:7-10). He knows men often carry job worries and other concerns home with them, which steal the peace, pleasure, and restorative purpose of the evening and night.

    Consider the value of the Bible. The Creator God gave practical advice to save men from the mental distresses of life. Contrary to social do-gooders and blind religious Pharisees, a cold beer or glass of wine before or with dinner is a great way to relax and be a better father and husband during the evening. Why allow your misery or poverty to also disturb the peace of your marriage and family? The Bible is a goldmine of such practical advice.

    God condemns drunkenness, an excess of wine or strong drink, which alters a person’s inhibitions and often leads to poverty or worse (Pr 20:1; 23:21,29-35; 31:5; I Cor 6:10). Here is the balance between abstinence and drunkenness – it is called temperance (I Cor 9:25; Phil 4:5). Temperance is not abstinence; it is moderation and self-discipline.

    God teaches His children to be filled with the Holy Spirit for their joy and peace in life (Eph 5:18; Rom 14:17; 15:13). Neither wine nor strong drink is the final cure for man’s frustration and loneliness in this world. Only God by His Spirit and word can truly satisfy and thrill the human soul (Ps 19:10; 73:25-26; 119:111; Is 26:3-4; Jer 9:23-24; Heb 13:5).

    Some will argue against the Bible’s wisdom of moderation and temperance toward wine and strong drink. They will impose their own rule that any drinking of alcohol is sin. They will ignore God’s clear permission for His worship to include both wine and strong drink in annual family celebrations (Deut 14:26). They will ignore the fact that Jesus was very different from John the Baptist in that He drank wine often (Luke 7:33-35).

    Wisdom is the fear of God to trust the Bible fully on every subject (Pr 8:5-8; Ps 119:128). God created a mood-altering chemical called alcohol and taught men how to obtain it from grapes (Is 28:23-29; Gen 9:20). Its moderate use is allowed and commended for the temporary relaxation and cheering effect. But wisdom also teaches that greater rest and happiness is in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Ghost (Matt 11:28-30; Rom 15:13).

    Why lump both alcohol and wine together as being sins?

    There is a long history of viniculture stretching way back into antiquity, and although the Bible condemns drunkenness, wine (for instance) is spoken of both metaphorically and literally throughout the old and new testaments, quite often positively. In moderation it is beneficial to the body – grapes (especially red grapes) have high levels of polyphenols, which are antioxidants that have been shown to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation and prevent some diseases, so is (to my mind) a common grace gift from God. Jesus must have thought so too because He turned water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana (not grape juice as some have suggested) and clearly drank wine Himself, so presumably cannot have considered its production and consumption (in moderation) sinful.     Cigarette smoking was of course unknown in biblical times and has a much shorter history, therefore the bible does not comment on it either positively or negatively. However, it is a mostly solitary, highly addictive habit, injurious to the body and unpleasant for those within range of the smoker, so arguably comes into the category of ‘sinful’. However, Spurgeon enjoyed a good cigar and C.S. Lewis smoked a pipe so I’m reluctant to condemn the activity out of hand – though to be fair, they lived at a time when smoking was generally considered to be healthy!

    I don’t think it is. You won’t go to hell for smoking a cig or drinking alcohol, but we are responsable of keeping God’s temple clean. The abuse of alcohol is something else because it causes you to do things you probably wouldn’t if you were sober. Not being conscience (drunk) is not an excuse. We are responsable at all times, so stay sober!

    Well not only is something like that obviously bad for you we shouldn’t have to have a scripture for everything. If you are filled with the Holy Spirit then you will be convicted on destructive things in your life. But also just look at how many people in the past who have suffered from lung cancer or broken families from the addiction. Recent excavation sites in Israel revealed that high priests in the Temple were smoking hash to help them become high. The same applies to playing musical instruments in worship. Show me where it is clearly forbidden in the Bible? There are people who are constantly making their own rules. If one chooses to follow a certain rule it is fine but do not make it an obligation for others. If you are vegetarian it is good but not necessary good for others. The Bible teaches that if your hand or eyes that lead you to sin cut it out. How many people are really following that?
