I often hear the modalists or arians on this page say that the early church didn’t believe in the trinity. Irenaeus (130-200 AD) the bishop of Lyons said, “So God became man, and the Lord himself saved us, giving us the sign of the Virgin..” This was early church history. This man was a follower of Polycarp who sat at the feet of the Apostle John who was obviously trinitarian. 1 John 5:7 “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the **Father**, the Word, and the **Holy Spirit**; and these three are one.” Nicea just cemented what our early Catholic fathers had laid down.
