Interpret this scripture.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. (1 Pet. 3:18–20)

  1. In light of the other scriptures which relate to this verse, Gen 6 and 1 Peter 4:6, I understand it to mean that when Jesus died he went to preach to those who perished in the flood. There were about 1,655 years between Adam and the flood, so none of the people born during this time had heard the gospel message. Jesus went to preach to them so they might have salvation in Him. Noah was the only righteous person on the earth, so he and his family were saved on the boat because Noah believed God when He said He was going to destroy the all living creatures.

This is a lovely OT example of how easy it is to be saved by faith.
