He washed the àpostles feet because he was teaching them to serve one another just. It was an example

Because we dont wear sandles and walk on dirt roads everywhere. It was common to wash your feet when coming into the home back then. Now we just take off our shoes..
But it is more custom to help someone put on their jacket or take their jacket when visiting.. it about being a service to someone. But feet are gross so there is that added effort of doing something unpleasant for someone even though they are your guest. -

Being a foot washer during the time of antiquity was one of the low-level jobs at the time. It was quite a shameful thing to have a job like that. But Jesus did that to His disciples to teach them to serve one another, to humble oneself and love each other as He has commanded them. The same thing is true with us, Christians in this century. We are to be humble, serving, and loving each other. For by this we know that we are His disciples if we love one another.

Folks wore sandles on dusty roads back then. Washing feet had to be done. What ‘s the point of washing clean feet now? Unless you want to find homeless people who don’t have access to hygeine? (Which is a good idea.)

SOME churches still do this. The PRACTICAL reason (at that time) was to have clean feet since there was dust and dirt on the roads. The SPIRITUAL reason for this is to show humility since some people (particularly Muslims) actually view the foot at the dirtiest part of the human body. Even Jesus Himself humbled Himself to wash the disciples feet and Peter tried to stop Jesus, but THEN Peter didn’t want Jesus to stop there. John 13:5 – 15 it’s CLEARLY documented and Jesus even said (verse 15) “For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you”.

I wonder how many people who INCORRECT and PASSIONATELY assert “do an expositional study, not just a 30 second google search” will actually come back and concede and acknowledge (for the benefit of the KINGDOM, since ALL glory goes to God) that they were wrong??

Jesus did this as an example to his disciples to show them that they should serve others.

It is practiced regularly in some churches, including the Quakers and Mennonite (not that I am a member or promote these churches).

He knew he came to serve… imagine being the one who’s having their feet Washed by God how would that make you feel

Washing another person’s feet was a most hospitable thing to do in Jesus’s day.
They did not always have cobblestone sidewalks and mostly dusty paths and roads.
Someone in the household would offer to wash your feet after entering their home.
It’s a sign of humility, Jesus said none are too good serve the other. -
It was cultural – more descriptive the prescriptive.
I wonder what an equivalent of feet washing would look like today.

I work for a Christian charity helping the homeless & those in need
Once a week we have a lady come & wash the guests feet. It’s a wonderful way of showing Christ. An incredible sign of love

My church used to do this. Infact, i have done this once. Its a really beautiful and humbling event that strengthens the relationship with the fellow believers. Its inevitable. But it has ceased now because of the modern setup i think. In short, nowadays there are only speakers and no “doers”.

The principle is of serving each other and showing love. Foot washing can be done as we take time to chat with a friend or to give to someone who ha a bill they cannot pay. There is a lack of it in many because this world is all about looking after number one. We need to love deeply, and to serve without fear.
