Luke 19:11-12 And as they heard these things, he added…
Luke 19:11-12 And as they heard these things, he added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.
He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
In this introduction to the parable of the talents, we are informed that the purpose of giving the parable was to correct the assumption that Jesus as the Messiah was going to IMMEDIATELY overthrow the Romans and reign as king in Jerusalem. The nobleman (Christ) goes into a far country (heaven) to receive a kingdom AND to RETURN. Nearly 2000 years have passed and many now have forgotten that the Nobleman Jesus is to return to the earth. Some have suggested that reign in Jerusalem will be heaven.
Others think that the Kingdom.of God to be established by Christ on earth was symbolic not literal.
Jesus also gave the parable because he was near to Jerusalem. Does this tell us that these things are to be understood literally and that they will be fulfilled when the time is right.
