Marvelous Mundane Lessons

Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
_Matthew 16:5-6

If you’ve followed my blogs for a while you know by now that I am a serious coffee drinker. I thought about my “drinking issue” when I recently read the passage of Scripture that included the above verses.

When I read the passage I thought it odd that, given all the things that Matthew could have included in his gospel, he made a point to mention that on one of their trips they forget to bring bread.

After all, Matthew only had a limited amount of space to try and capture the most important event in human history – the coming of God to earth in human flesh!

And to mention leaving lunch?

But then I thought about my constant vigilance at monitoring the milk level in the frig. For truth is, I love my coffee but I want it a certain way and that includes milk.

In my home, to allow the milk to run out before grocery day is mentioned–trust me.

But it happens. And forgetting bread and other mundane things happens and somehow we survive.

Matthew didn’t mention the missing bread because of the bread…

Matthew mentioned the bread because Jesus used it to teach the disciples a very important lesson.

I think there’s a lesson there for all of us.

The ONE THING for today: Be on the lookout today for those marvelous mundane lessons – Jesus never wastes an opportunity to teach and improve our lives – even when we forget to bring lunch or milk for the coffee.
