One of the earliest attempts to seek for an integrated congregation was Earl P. Paulk, Jr. at Hemphill Church of God at Atlanta. It was a strong conservative church with ties to the Talmadge family, Lester Maddox and white Atlanta politics. During his eight years from 1950 -1958 there he laid a foundation for the future of Hemphill which later became Mount Paran Church of God.
