Full Title – Part 2: The Song of Moses: A Chronological Eschatology of Israel and Her Modern Rock
This profound prophetic song, delivered by Moses at the end of his life, serves as a sweeping historical and eschatological roadmap. It outlines a strict progression: from Israel’s unique election, through her spiritual rebellion and scattering, across the centuries of the Church Age. It continues through the horrors of the 20th century, up to her modern reliance on a geopolitical superpower, and finally, to her ultimate restoration when God reveals Himself as her only true Rock.
Section 1: The Divine Standard vs. Human Corruption (Deut 31:29 – 32:6)
Deuteronomy 31:29 “For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.”
Moses prefaces his song by establishing its timing: it is directed to the ‘latter days.’ This introductory warning highlights the classic tension between God’s unyielding perfection and humanity’s recurring spiritual failures.
Deuteronomy 32:1–3 “Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.”
The “doctrine” spoken of here is explicitly eschatological—the doctrine of last things. Prophecy and eschatology are not meant to induce fear but to showcase the absolute sovereignty and greatness of God. When history unfolds exactly as predicted, it brings glory to the Creator.
Deuteronomy 32:4–6 “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation. Do ye thus requite the LORD, O foolish people and unwise? is not he thy father that hath bought thee? hath he not made thee, and established thee?”
A sharp contrast is drawn between God, the Rock (Tzur in Hebrew, signifying immutability and absolute strength), and a “perverse and crooked generation.” It is the height of human folly to blame God for the consequences of our own rebellion. Man commits crimes against his Maker and then grows bitter when divine chastisement falls.
The term Rock (Tzur) is used structurally throughout this chapter to contrast the true God with false security systems. As the Apostle Peter notes of a generation under evaluation: “Save yourselves from this untoward [crooked] generation” (Acts 2:40).
Section 2: The Sovereign Blueprint of History (Deut 32:7–14)
Deuteronomy 32:7–9 “Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee. When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel. For the LORD’S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.”
God appeals directly to history. He reminds Israel that before they were even a formal nation, the global map was drawn with them in mind. When the nations were scattered at the Tower of Babel, God intentionally engineered the geography of civilization to place Israel at its strategic center.
The Geographic Crossroad: Geographically, ancient Israel was situated at the land bridge connecting three continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa. This aligns perfectly with Acts 17:26: “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation.”
Deuteronomy 32:10–12 “He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.”
God chose Abraham out of Ur of the Chaldees—a land of rampant idolatry—and systematically emptied him of his idols to care for him directly. This protective care is analogous to the security promised to New Testament believers who abide closely in Christ.
John 15:7: “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.”
Deuteronomy 32:13–14 “He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock; Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape.”
God did not just provide bare necessities; He provided extreme abundance and luxury. The “breed of Bashan” represents the absolute pinnacle of agricultural quality in the ancient Near East.
The Wealth of Bashan: Bashan (the modern Golan Heights region) was famous throughout antiquity for its rich, volcanic soil, dense pastures, and magnificent, heavily muscled livestock. (See Ezekiel 39:18, which references the “fatlings of Bashan”).
Section 3: The Complacency of Abundance & The Great Rejection (Deut 32:15–21)
Deuteronomy 32:15–18 “But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.”
“Jeshurun” is a poetic, endearing title for Israel, meaning “upright one.” Yet, in her material luxury, Israel grew thick, proud, and complacent, turning her back on her Maker. While ancient Israel literally fell into physical idolatry and demon worship (“sacrificed unto devils”), modern humanity achieves the same result by treating material wealth and personal relationships as substitutes for God. The ultimate national manifestation of being “unmindful of the Rock” occurred when the nation historically rejected her Messiah.
Deuteronomy 32:19–20 “And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters. And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.”
Because of this deep spiritual blindness, God withdrew His direct presence and stewardship from the nation, leaving them desolate and initiating a long period of spiritual concealment.
Matthew 23:37-38: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem… how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.”
Isaiah 29:10: “For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes…”
Deuteronomy 32:21“They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.”
This verse acts as a massive chronological anchor, explicitly shifting the timeline of Moses’ prophecy directly into the Church Age. God sidesteps ethnic Israel as His primary global steward nation and turns to the Gentile world with the Gospel.
The Apostle Paul directly quotes this verse in the New Testament to explain the divine strategy behind the Church Age:
Romans 10:19-20: “But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you. But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not…”
Section 4: The Severe Chastisement: From Diaspora to Holocaust (Deut 32:22–25)
Deuteronomy 32:22–23 “For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them.”
Following the national rejection of Jesus the Messiah, Israel as a nation suffered an intense, prolonged dispersion. The destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. shattered their national identity, sending them into a worldwide Diaspora that lasted nearly two millennia.
Deuteronomy 32:24–25 “They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust. The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.”
While these verses found partial fulfillment in the ancient Babylonian and Roman conquests, the language of total attempted, indiscriminate annihilation—specifically targeting infants (“the suckling”) and the elderly (“man of gray hairs”) in systematic, industrial heat (“burnt with hunger… devoured with burning heat”)—uniquely echoes the horrors of the 20th-century Nazi Holocaust.
During the Babylonian captivity, the elite and young were intentionally kept alive and brought to Babylon (like Daniel and his friends); during the Holocaust, the brutal attempt of Hitler and Israel’s enemies to erase Israel completely from the map of human history.
During the Holocaust, there was a targeted systematic annihilation of all generations: young men & virgins, infants (sucklings), and the elderly (gray hairs).
The Historical Facts of The Holocaust
- Systematic Extermination: Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany systematically murdered approximately 6 million Jews—roughly two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population.
- No Demographics Were Spared: The Nazi “Final Solution” intentionally spared no age group, executing an estimated 1.5 million children (matching Moses’ prophecy of the suckling and young man) along with hundreds of thousands of elderly individuals (man of gray hairs).
- The Ovens: Millions were literally devoured by “burning heat” inside the industrial crematoria of concentration camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau and Treblinka.
Section 5: Regathering and the False Security of a Geopolitical “Rock” (Deut 32:26–34)
Deuteronomy 32:26–29 “I said, I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men: Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, Our hand is high, and the LORD hath not done all this. For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them. O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!”
God notes that if He allowed Israel’s enemies to fully succeed, those Gentile nations would boast that their own strength—not God’s sovereign hand of discipline—had severely chastised the Jewish people. Therefore, God steps in and does what seemed impossible to preserve them, and directs attention once more to their “latter end.”
As seen here, “O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!” This verse clearly bumps up this prophecy to Israel in today’s world.
Then God shows that Israel’s chastening was not in the power of their enemies, but that of God.
Deuteronomy 32:30 “How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?”
Israel’s historical weakness and preservation were both entirely managed by God. The Gentile empires could never have broken or scattered Israel unless the true Rock had deliberately “sold them” into that temporary judgment for the duration of the Church Age.
The miracle of the Rebirth of the nation of Israel
- The 1948 Rebirth: Against all historical odds, on May 14, 1948, Israel officially declared its statehood and independent identity.
- Demographic Shift: Following the global dispersion (Diaspora), the Jewish population shifted back to the homeland. Today, Israel’s Jewish population stands at approximately 7.2 to 7.7 million, representing nearly 45%of all global Jewry—making it the largest single concentration of Jewish people on Earth.
The Small “r” Rock: The United States of America
Deuteronomy 32:31“For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.”
Upon returning to the land after the trauma of WWII, Israel naturally sought a powerful protector. They found a profound friend and strategic benefactor in the United States of America. However, this verse warns of a “small ‘r’ rock”—a human, political substitute for the Living God. While America has served as a safe haven and a powerful military shield for Israel, it is ultimately a flawed, temporary proxy replacement of trust in the living true God.
The US-Israel Alliance
- Immediate Recognition: The United States was the first nation to extend de facto recognition to the provisional Jewish state, doing so a mere 11 minutes after Israel’s declaration of independence in 1948.
- Strategic Shield: The U.S. has provided Israel with over $150 billion in bilateral assistance and military funding, serving as its primary geopolitical defender and frequently utilizing its UN Security Council veto power to protect Israel from international sanctions.
Israel’s false trust (America) is described.
Deuteronomy 32:32–34 “For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter: Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps. Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?”
Moses outlines a devastating moral description of this modern, surrogate rock. The text details a severe internal rot, comparing its cultural output to Sodom and Gomorrah. This mirrors the sharp domestic decline witnessed across Western civilization—specifically in America—where traditional biblical morality is rapidly discarded for secularism, materialism, and a dramatic spiritual drift.
American Spiritual & Social Shifts
- The Rise of the “Nones”: According to multi-decade polling data from the Pew Research Center, the percentage of Americans identifying as Christians has fallen dramatically from over 85%in the late 20th century to nearly 60% today. Meanwhile, the secular, religiously unaffiliated population (the “Nones”) has skyrocketed.
- Institutional Shift: Traditional church attendance has declined sharply, concurrent with a historic drop in birth rates and marriage rates across the United States.
Section 6: The Fall of the False Rock and Divine Vindication (Deut 32:35–43)
Deuteronomy 32:35–36 “To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.”
The judgment of Israel’s human proxy America occurs rapidly (“their foot shall slide in due time”). God deliberately allows the earthly strength of Israel’s allies to fail or implode—whether through economic collapse, political fracturing, or cultural decay or amalgamation into a global order, or even the possibility of an unpredictable war—so that in the end Israel has absolutely no one left to turn to but the Lord Himself. When Israel’s worldly prop and power are completely gone, Israel has nowhere to find help, defense, and protection but to look upward to her Originator.
Deuteronomy 32:37–39 “And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted, Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let them rise up and help you, and be your protection. See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.”
God poses a piercing question to Israel: Where is the small “r” rock that received your best minds, your elite technology, and your primary trust? Let them save you now. With the total collapse of their geopolitical safety nets, God beautifully reintroduces Himself to His people. This marks the culmination of the age, pointing directly to the Second Advent of Jesus Christ. He reveals Himself as the ultimate provider and executioner of justice, the only author of life, and Israel’s only true Protector.

Deuteronomy 32:40–43 “For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy. Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.”
The Song of Moses concludes at the end of the Great Tribulation with the revelation of Jesus Christ. The global nations that abused their power and hated God’s word face definitive divine retribution. Yet, the final note of this epic prophecy is one of staggering, immeasurable grace: God extends profound mercy to both the literal physical land and His regenerated people, ushering in His glorious Kingdom Age under the direct rule of Jesus Christ—the eternal Rock of our Salvation.
