Shipwrecked Vision

“Developing a vision and then living it vigorously and authentically are essential elements of leadership.  __Aubrey Malphurs, Developing a Vision for Ministry in the 21st Century

The longer I live the more convinced I am that vision is vastly overrated.

The landscape is littered with the husks and hulls of what were once great enterprises, ministries, and movements. Like shipwrecks at the bottom of the sea, their buildings now litter the landscape.

Was all the effort, money and time spent worth it?

In many cases the answer would be yes…perhaps.

But great visions require great humility lest the vision become about the success of the visionary.

Best to understand that in this fast-paced world where tomorrow’s headlines are pushing today’s headlines out of the way before we’ve even had time to read them, its probably best, in most cases, to have a short-term vision of what you need to do now and a long-term commitment to being obedient to the One who already has a vision for the world and for eternity.

The ONE THING for today: Not only does “vision leak” but visions have a shelf-life which is becoming increasingly short. Instead of stressing over making a vision that will motivate and move people, follow Jesus and let Him make you.

Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
