Should Scripture be interpreted through holy tradition or can we understand it directly?

  1. Scripture always should be interpreted by scripture usually other scriptures the Bible self attesting!

  2. Traditionalism is a deviation from scripture. Jesus broke those chains that bound us to the traditions of the past.

  3. Holy Tradition is the deposit of faith given by Jesus Christ to the Apostles and passed on in the Church from one generation to the next without addition, alteration or subtraction. Vladimir Lossky has famously described the Tradition as “the life of the Holy Spirit in the Church.” It is dynamic in application, yet unchanging in dogma. It is growing in expression, yet ever the same in essence.

Unlike many conceptions of tradition in popular understanding, the Orthodox Church does not regard Holy Tradition as something which grows and expands over time, forming a collection of practices and doctrines which accrue, gradually becoming something more developed and eventually unrecognizable to the first Christians. Rather, Holy Tradition is that same faith which Christ taught to the Apostles and which they gave to their disciples, preserved in the whole Church and especially in its leadership through Apostolic Succession.

As understood by many protestants (especially those of the more evangelical persuasion), Tradition stands in contrast to Scripture. However, there are number references in Holy Scripture to Holy Tradition. For example:

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. Luke 1:1-4 (Note: In this instance, the oral word preceded the written word. Hence Holy Tradition.)

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.John 20:30-31

Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. John 21:25

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 1 Corinthians 5:9-10 (Note: Here Paul makes a reference to a letter written to Corinth before the letter we know today as 1st Corinthians. This letter is unknown to modern scholars.

Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. 1 Corinthians 11:2

And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea. Colossians 4:16 (Note: The “epistle from Laodicea” is not available to us today is written form.)

So then, brothers, stand firm, and cling to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. 2 Thessalonians 2:15

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. 2 Thessalonians 3:6

  4. 2 Peter 1:20-21 KJV

[20] Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

[21] For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

  5. What did the Bible said regarding Tradition: ?

    Mark 7:6-9 KJV

[6] He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

[7] Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

[8] For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

[9] And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

  6. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. – John 14:26

  7. Only with the Holy Spirit and seeking God in spirit and in truth can one come to know the unsearchable riches and gems! The mystery hidden since the foundation’s of the world were laid! That even the angels were no privy to. Know revealed to the world by us the body of Christ in this last time!

  8. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thine ways knowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths

  9. Nothing wrong with tradition. It’s been part of culture. Tradition should be studied and questioned using scripture. Not the other way… If scripture is to be interpreted, then it’s directly with the help of the Holy Spirit..

  10. 1 Peter 1:20-21″knowing this first, that no prophecy of the. Scripture is of any private interpretation.

  11. Scripture should be interpreted in it’s intended context like any other form of literature. Where its literal , then literal. Where theres hyperbole, then in that way, or figurative, then figurative, etc… The context will let you know what form is being used. And most of all seek the Holy Spirit for wisdom and understanding. Tradition is good as long as it does not contradict the scriptures.

  12. Bible doctrine (teaching) is not derived from the following
2 Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that NO prophecy of the scripture is of any PRIVATE INTERPRETATION.

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Paul’s & Peters gospel by Revelation

Paul- Gal 1:12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the REVELATION of Jesus Christ.

Gal 2:2 And I went up by REVELATION, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

Eph 3:3 How that by REVELATION he made known unto me the MYSTERY; (as I wrote afore in few words,

    Peter-1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the REVELATION of Jesus Christ;

    God in his own words

Isaiah 28:9 Whom shall HE teach KNOWLEDGE?

and WHOM shall he make to UNDERSTAND

    DOCTRINE? >see>(1 Tim 3:16)

THEM that are >> weaned from the MILK, and drawn from the BREAST.
    >>>>So they are not babies <<< <> (See Hebrews 5:12-14- Milk vs Strong meat) < Isaiah 28:10 For precept MUST BE UPON PRECEPT, precept upon PRECEPT; Line UPON line, LINE upon LINE; here a little, and there a little: AND Jesus quotes - Duet 17:6 & in the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses Matt 18:16 Respectfully.

  13. The bible revelation & line upon line-

Context VS revelation AND line upon line

We see in The following scripture, Luke 4:20-22
    Jesus is quoting >Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

Isaiah 61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,

HE STOPPED HERE and omitted the rest of verse 2,

…and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; >>>>>> which applies to our day!<<< We can see Jesus cut out in this scripture and used what only applied to that moment The scriptures are put together by Revelation & line upon line Isaiah 28:9-10 Isaiah 28:9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? see >(1 Tim 3:16) them that are >> weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. > (See Hebrews 5:12-13- Milk vs Strong meat) < Isaiah 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: if you will humble yourself and reread what I posted you will see Lord willing what I put together by revelation is sound scripture, look at all the prophecies of Jesus if you will EXAMPLE 2 Fulfillment 1 Messiah would be born of a woman. Isaiah 7;14 fulfilled Matt 1:22-23. This fulfillment is not based on the context around this Isaiah 7:14, it is used by Jesus to by revelation he delivered to the disciples EXAMPLE 3 In Genesis 3:15 Everyone knows that this ( IT ) is Jesus the Messiah Genesis 3::15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; (> it<) shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. <<<<<>>>>>>>> ONE WORD<<<<<<<<< Just like this THING is in Luke 1:35 Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that HOLY THING which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. >>>>>>>>>>>>ONE WORD<<<<<<<<<<<<< So do you see (understand) the point? there is nothing presupposes By God’s grace you are witnessing what it means to be ; SEE > line upon line, line upon line

As you see in Genesis 3 there is only ONE WORD ( it ) like there is in Luke 1:35-one word (thing) >> upon line, line upon line, precept must be upon precept, precept. ; here a little, and there a little:
    Example 4
Talking about Isaac who the promised comes through

It is the same in this prophecy Genesis 17:19 two words His Seed AND >>> 2 Words THY SEED

Messiah would be a descendant of Isaac.
Genesis 21:12 > two words THY SEED
    Fulfilled >Luke 3:34

The scriptures are repeat with this type pattern.
    It is BY REVELATION brother

What I put together in my post to Bell is 100% correct, it introduces Matt 17:11 the foretold Elijah for our day, weather you believe it or not.
And remember there is Tangible proof IF YOU CAN Isaiah 53:1

    Respectfully
GOD IS NOT KNOWN BY REVELATION

  14. Sure understand it in yer own way and then start yer own church. Then say your interpretation is correct because it is inspired by the Holy Spirit….just as every other “inspired” church does.
