Sometimes even Pentecostal preachers make “doctrinal changes” throughout their ministry. For example, I have an old recording of Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart preaching “my mama never wore EARBOBS, my wife has never worn EARBOBS, AND SHE WILL NEVER WEAR EATBOBS.” Of course, in stating earbobs, Brother Swaggart was referring to EAR-RINGS. I also recall memorizing a sermon by Rev. Ray Hughes, Sr. while he was serving the main Speaker of the Church of God FORWARD IN FAITH national program entitled, “SOCIAL SINS.” In Dr. Hughes’ sermon, he preaches very hard against LIQUOR and ALCOHOL, DANCING and even GOING TO THE MOVIES. He quoted many scholars and gave statistics to reveal that what he was preaching was true. Today, if any preacher in Pentecostal denominations would preach such a thing, they would throw him out, close down his revival and never have him preach again.

There are Pentecostal preachers who still preach against such things, but maybe not in the Pentecostal feminizations (Thyatira churches).

I don’t know of many Pentecostal denominations that would kick a preacher out for preaching against drinking alcohol or even ear bobs.
(It’s too bad for ‘old timey’ Pentecostals named ‘Bob’ who kept looking up, thinking someone was talking to them, when people talked about bobs, bobbing hair, and cleaning the bobby pins on the floor.)
It is much more important that we keep the teaching of the word Biblical, in line with what Jesus and the apostles taught, than in line with Pentecostal or Holiness tradition. Jesus drank wine and turned water into wine. The early church drank wine for communion. John Wesley was against distilled liquor but drank wine, and that eventually evolved into preaching against drinking any alcohol for nonmedicinal purposes in the Holiness movement. We should stick to the Bible on this issue, not tradition.
Movies? There are definitely dangers with secular films. But if you get people to be so legalistic they think it is a sin to watch a Christian movie or have a TV in the house (some Firebaptized Holiness are against that) even if you are using it to play Christian music tapes or DVDs for the little kids, that’s clearly too extreme. People need to understand the moral principles, not just have a list of rules like “Don’t go near the movie theater.”
Dancing? Dancing isn’t a sin. Rubbing your body against a member of the opposite sex (or same sex for some people these days) you aren’t married to is clearly dangerous. Jiggling around and twerking half naked to entice people and show off one’s boooooteeee to everyone is also highly inappropriate. Again, moral principles. Dancing is a part of the culture in Indonesia. At an Indonesian party full of church folks in Ohio, some people were dancing. I wondered if the GBI/COG preacher would do so. He cut a rug, too. The Bible mentions dancing. Dancing isn’t evil. I would say claiming all dancing is sinful is silly legalism, but this kind of nonsense preaching can actually damage people, lead people to be judgmental, etc. Let’s keep the doubtful disputations out of the pulpits, especially when they have no basis in the word of God.
Just because it’s old timey Pentecostal or Holiness preaching doesn’t make it Biblical or good. A lot of great things have been done in the Pentecostal and Holiness movements. But there are a lot of traditions of men that some folks need to be freed from.

You cannot prove in the Bible that Jesus ever mane an alcoholic wine. Study your Bible. Sometimes the grapes on the vine was revered to as wine. Why would Proverbs 20:1 say Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived there by is not wise. Why would Jesus say be not drunk with wine where there is excess. But be Filled with The Spirit. I could say more but that’s enough to get the picture. I’m baby sitting you can’t write while baby sitting.

I am appalled at the way so many Pentecostals members and ministers are accepting liquor, wine and alcoholic beverages. I have been requested by several fine Christian people to write on this subject. I have never once thought that I would need to write on such a subject. But times have changed and there appears to be a great need for this to be done. Why? Because many are far from God today. Louise Cummings, you totally correct. Do not let anyone persuade you otherwise. Continue to stand on Proverbs 20:1.

It looks like you are deceived by it when the Bible says strong drink is raging and wine is a mocker. If your deceived by it , it not wise. That alone should let you know strong drink is wrong.

Btw, I’m not encouraging people to go out and have a beer. I do think it is sad if a Pentecostal would turn down communion because it had a bit of alcohol in it like Swaggart did once in a Russian church. It’s also sad when Pentecostals look down their noses on Christians who do drink in moderation like Jesus and the apostles did.

I don’t remember ever seeing Francis’ earlobes. I used to go to church there. Her hair isn’t that long, but does she wear ear bobs?
Btw, was an earbob originally used for an ‘earring’ that isn’t really a ring?

Jesus said in Matthew 26:27, ‘Drink ye all of it’. So the question is, what was in the cup?
Jews drank wine, real fermented wine, that had to be fermented to be considered kosher for Passover. Grape juice could have live yeast in it, and they scrapped the dead yeast off the fermented stuff and considered it kosher? Does anyone have a reason to think something else was in the cup?
If there was wine in the cup, then, on that occasion, didn’t Jesus command His disciples to drink wine?

I occasionally buy a bottle of grape or blackberry wine and it will last about a month.

They called it Ear Bobs when they preached against it..Now it is ear rings…They called it bobed hair back when it was wrong to cut hair…Now we call it trimming it…lol

It’s called “mellowing” out! By the time my daddy was being one of the flock instead of the Sheppard he had somewhat done just this! He pastored for 60 yrs & I don’t know his very thought’s on all of this outward appearance but he at least either stopped looking as closely or grew tired of trying to change all the women’s looks! Anyway the couple that came to pastor, the wife wore pants to the work day at church! When he & I were discussing it he mentioned the pants a being pretty well fitted! I think they were polyester & she was “pleasantly plump”! He said it didn’t cause him to have a “rigger” so that was when I really noticed a change in at least his voicinig his opinion! Our mom never wore earrings but did get to wear a wedding band! So life goes on & we either go with it or get left behind!!!!!!

Well Rev I think you are close to being raised in my generation! If you never heard this term then call a “shiver” if you will! I grew up with ole school people that spoke Ozarky words! This was one! If anyone in our house was sick with a fever they sometimes had a “Rigger”!

There is a whole lot worse things that can be done than small ear rings.

By saying there are “a whole lot worse things than,” you are conceding that wearing “small ear rings” are bad (even if you did not intend to do so). “Whole lot worse” is another way of saying “more worse” which implies that something is worse, but this is worser.

My precious Jesus! What in the world is wrong with you folk? If you gonna wear “earrings” wear any type! Clip on or pierced! If it is so immodest due to men’s wondering eyes then just don’t do it period! Now don’t get me started on nose, or any facial ring??? Oh.btw add tattoos to that comment!

Dorcas, what does the Bible say. If the bible says it is not a problem then what’s the problem? men’s wandering eyes have nothing to say toward interpreting scripture.

Well I wasn’t giving men a pass here! I was just saying “if”. A lady belonging to our organization feels the need to watch men of the church who may even be looking at her then that is between them & their God! I’m speaking about any woman & every man in this comment!

Just because things change in a church doesn’t make it right…there is very little holiness in the churches of today. Please do not start sending me ugly remarks..just because i have made an observation
