So, recently I have decided to read through Genesis again, been at least a year or two since I’ve been through it. (Not saying I don’t read or study, just haven’t been in Genesis in a long time). I hit Genesis 7 tonight and something stuck out to me that bothered me. How could Noah have an idea about what animals were clean and unclean? Since the law was not given until Moses. “Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate, and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate,

In all honesty I would question the assumption that Noah didn’t know what animals were clean and unclean. In Genesis 7:2 God explicitly tells Noah to take seven pairs of all the clean animals and a pair of each clean animal. This to me would suggest that Noah was aware of what animals were clean and unclean, we just didn’t get it written out until the time of Moses.

Now with this we have to bear in mind that Moses wrote Genesis, so he could have chosen not to list the animals because they were going to be listed in Leviticus anyway. From what we understand all five of Moses books were written around the same time, so it could be as simple as that. He decided not to include a list in Genesis because he was going to include it in Leviticus which was also being penned around the same time as Genesis.

In terms of Leviticus 11 which is where we see this list. We can’t say for certain if this was a unique revelation of if it was God giving Moses a list of animals because he was now writing these things down.

Basically, to assume that Noah didn’t know what animals were clean and unclean is a leap. It’s not something we can say is the case, at best we can infer it.
