The tension between pastor and evangelist: there’s far more to having a revival than meets the eye. The evangelist looks forward to a revival to keep busy, to fulfill his or her calling and yes to keep food on the table. The pastor frets that a revival will interrupt his schedule, that he might once again have to endure some less than good preaching. He has a feeling that Murphy’s Law is at work during revivals.( if anything can go wrong, it will and and at the worst possible time. )
The evangelist will likely try too hard to be the hero of the week and the pastor will be fulfilling a role that he is not familiar or comfortable with.
Yet for the COG pastor and the COG evangelist the issue is not about either of them but rather about the people on the fringes, those that need to be moved from the fringes to the inner circle.
In the end if the weak have been strengthened, the doubters have renewed their faith and those that have slacked off will recommit to real discipleship; then there is a win-win for everyone.
