When You Raise Your Children in Sodom

Now the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.”

Genesis 19:31-32

Genesis 19:30-38 has to be one of the saddest passages of Scripture in the Bible.

It describes how the daughters of Lot got their dad drunk in order to have sex with him in the hopes that they would get pregnant and be able to carry on the family line.

As tragic and revolting as this seems, it should not be a surprise. When you raise your children in Sodom, things like this happen.

It’s a delicate and difficult challenge for parents to raise their children in any generation.  Where do you find the balance of protecting and sheltering your children from the harmful and aberrant practices and values of the culture around you without setting them up to be blown away by it when it comes time for them to enter into that culture as young adults because they have not be prepared?

It’s not an easy question to answer.  But this I know, you must not be passive.  You must make wise and intentional choices based on your values and the future you desire for those you love.

The ONE THING for today: Lot made the choice to pursue the comforts of a better lifestyle and he succeeded.  I’m sure his daughters wore the latest fashions and owned the best gadgets of the day  But they also lived in Sodom, and unfortunately, when you raise your children in Sodom they act like.
