The Role of the Holy Spirit in Hermeneutics

Paul asks for a great deal in this prayer, and our thoughts can always travel far beyond any words, yet the excess of God’s power goes so far beyond any thoughts we may think. This excess is symbolized by a double term of abundance (exceedingly abundant), as if Paul wished to fill our minds with the idea of ABSOLUTE INFINITY OF GRACIOUS POWER IN GOD.] “To me…this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and TO BRING TO LIGHT FOR EVERYONE what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, so that through the church THE MANIFOLD WISDOM OF GOD might now be made known…” (Eph. 3:8-10) [Let us take notice, that the conversion of the Gentile world to the faith of Christ was an endearing mystery, and we need to bless God for it. Who would have imagined that those of us who had been so long in the dark, and at so great a distance from God, would be enlightened with the marvellous light, and be made one with Christ! Manifold wisdom: having many and countless forms, features and parts, there are no limits on God’s wisdom!] “For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches HE MAY STRENGTHEN YOU WITH POWER THROUGH HIS SPIRIT IN YOUR INNER BEING…” (Eph. 3:14-16) [Strength from the Spirit of God in the inner man is the best and most needed strength, strength in the soul, the strength of faith and other graces, strength to serve God and to do our duty, and to continue in our Christian course with vigor and with great joy!] “…so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that YOU MAY BE FILLED TO THE MEASURE OF ALL THE FULLNESS OF GOD.” (Eph. 3:17-19)
