July 10: 7 Tammuz
It was on this day in 1938 that President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for an international conference at Evian, France, for the purpose of considering what to do with “displaced persons,” meaning Jews. The negligible results at this particular conference accentuated the passive attitude the West had to what the Nazis were already doing, not just to Jews, but any other group who disagreed with them. At the end of World War II, seven years after this conference, the world would see the costs that are paid when you look the other way and don’t care enough. When the world saw this, they said, “Never again!”
Well, here we are, and things are taking shape in the world that have the potential to be every bit as bad as what happened in the 1930s and 40s, if not worse. As a matter of fact, if we are living in the last days, we know that things will get worse. The Messiah said the end of days will be unlike anything the world has ever seen, adding that:
“And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.” (Matthew 24:22)
Unfortunately, it is going to get worse and, knowing that we are living in perilous times, we can’t afford to look the other way. We can’t stick our head in the sand and pretend like these awful things going on around the world aren’t happening. At the same time, we can’t allow our focus to be on what the world is doing to the point that we are fearful of these things. God warned us not to allow the ways of the world to cause of the live in fear and dread of them. Through Isaiah He said:
“Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’ concerning all that this people call a conspiracy, nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow; let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread.” (Isaiah 8:12-13)
Even though we are facing perilous times, we’re not to be in dread of tyrannical politicians, wicked institutions or aggressive countries. If we are going to fear anyone or anything, it should be a just and Holy God. If we have a healthy fear and respect for our Creator, we will be provoked to focus upon Him and listen to His voice. We can’t afford to be lulled to sleep with the mantras of men. We must hear His voice because we have been placed in this world to be “a voice, crying in the wilderness” and to “prepare the way of the Lord.”
Let us pray that the Father will strengthen us to do just that – to fear Him more than any other and to love Him more than any other. If we do, then we should expect to, one day, hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
