So I go to a Apostolic church right, where the oneness and Acts 2:38 and receiving Holy Spirit with evidence in speaking in tongues and we’re told me need it for salvation ain’t that CRAZY to speak in tongues to be saved! Can some of you tell me your POV. Though I’m still their because on how the Lord is praised and the love there is it’s like a family. I agree and disagree with many things here. We can’t ignore John 3:5.

What in the world does John 3:5 have to do with speaking in tongues?

  2. Doug Hammond says:

    Go elsewhere, wrong teaching.

  3. Harold Goldman says:

First of all Christ saves not speaking in another language that’s really biblical tongues. Jesus didn’t die so we can speak in tongues but so we can have a relationship with God

  4. Bob White says:

Go for the Truth, not the worship. Oneness teaching and speaking in tongues to receive salvation have been heretical teachings since they were introduced…run, don’t walk away and find a Bible teaching Church. The Father was not talking to Himself at Jesus’ baptism when he said this is my son in whom I am well pleased, and then flew away as a dove. They will twist and torture Scripture to support this. Do a Bible study on speaking in tongues and you will not find that direct teaching anywhere that you must speak in tongues to be saved. It’s just another in a list of Gifts.

  5. Larry Koester says:

Where in Scripture does it say you need to speak in tongues to be saved. It doesn’t. It does say he who believes and is baptized shall be saved w he who believes no shall be dammed. David Spaude

  6. Dominic Polverino says:

If you look in the book of Acts you will see the clear distinction between tongues and salvation. Like when Peter saw what happened to Cornelius. The wording there and looking at some Greek words show that tongues was the evidence they received a gift that can only be given to those who are saved, not that the gift saves. God showed them He shows no partiality and will save who He wants and He gave them the same gift of tongues as well, therefore, the Jews saw that God also poured out His salvation and this gift on Gentiles and not just Jews. No where in Scripture does it say person is saved by speaking in tongues. It’s a beautiful gift but THE GIFT is what Jesus did on the Cross for us. His blood purchased my redemption from sin and that is more than enough. I don’t need anything else yet He freely gives us all things, including spiritual gifts like speaking in tongues. Hope that clarifies.

    i say run away ..

  8. Alyssa Nicole Campos says:

Best thing to do is get out. I’ve been raised in radical Pentecostal and apostolic churches, I know all about it. Though it might hurt to leave those whom you truly bonded with and love there, you gotta go my friend. Don’t comprise biblical doctrine for their worship. True worshipers worship in spirit and truth, and that doesn’t mean music.

  9. Stephanie Schwartz says:

Speaking in tongues is one of the gifts. Not everyone will get it.

  10. Bob Jones says:

You need to get out of that church as fast as possible

  11. John Balich says:

Paul clearly states that not all speak in tongues…..all do not prophesy……etc

  12. Toni Armstrong says:

Pray about it and study the word Don’t get your advice about salvation from people’s opinions

  13. Nicholas Garrett says:

I have observed many types of Christians over the years. A percentage want truth and they keep their nose in the Bible and they go wherever it leads regardless of what fellowship it leads them to. There are many for whom fellowship is the key… for example, A family has gone to the church for many generations, or there is a very tight close knit group of friends. This can sometimes allow poor doctrine to be practiced and good scripture to be looked over/passed aside.

This is a very tough decision to make whether or not you leave a church, and why. Where will you go next? Do you have one or more older people in the faith that can act as mentors for you? Of different ages and ideas? Ones who read scripture, pray, and demonstrate biblical wisdom? I know a great many people who are very eager and they spend a lot of time in the books and can repeat many good Christian things verbatim – but they sit home alone on Sundays. That in itself is not a sin but it can be very lonely and it can impact your ability to continue learning the Christian faith and your ability to actually practice it. If you are only getting the interpretation of what you read from the voice in your head one might doubt you are making progress. Every person has to have someone to talk ideas out loud with and reflect off of. Another consequence of not having this, is that secrets sin will often creep into our lives because we don’t have the oversight that is so essential to living a godly life. I have struggled with this so much, so I know what I’m talking about here. Pray, read the Bible, and pray more. Seek out a few mentors. While you are discerning the questions you have about your church, take off the glasses that allow you to see everything wrong with it and put on the ones that allow you to see where you can be of service to your brothers and sisters in Christ. That is where your answers will come from.

Finally, as far as criticism of denominations that hold what some call strange doctrines and practices – One cannot truly fully understand Christianity without analyzing the sum of all of its parts. As much as we don’t like the fact it is a fact. Hundreds of thousands of well-meaning technical heretics go to church every Sunday and Wednesday and read their Bibles and pray. The Christian life happens in the gray nuanced areas not the binary “ either” “ or”

    Best wishes

  14. Kathy Bark says:

Oneness is denying the trinity and is wrong, and it’s not necessary to speak in tongues to be saved!!

  15. Lourdes Vega Anderson says:

I left a church that I absolutely loved and attended for 20 years because they started teaching that tongues was a requirement to prove one had the Holy Spirit. I believe in the gifts of the Spirit and I believe some people have the gift, but not everyone does. That is clearly biblical. They were my family and I loved them and still miss them and there was so much love and service there, but I could not continue once they crossed this line.

  16. Horacio Sanchez says:

Thank you all for your comments may the Lord bless you all

  17. Kevin Taylor says:

Biblical “tongues” was simply the language of various countries (think English, German, Italian, Greek, Russian, etc) this is proven when those being spoken to said “what is this that we hear you in our native tongue”. It was a temporary gift which passed away over time, just like the gift of healing. Paul, during his 2nd time in prison, had a close friend who was dying from a sickness. Paul wrote that he was no longer able to heal his friend and prayed for God to do it.

Tongues and healing are no longer possible as they passed even during the time of Paul.

  18. Kevin Taylor says:

If a church claims to believe in tongues, why do they ignore the other gifts that were described in the same chapter and verses? Specifically drinking poison and being bitten by poisonous snakes.

The fact that they’ve “cherry picked” the easiest ‘gift’ to fake, and ignored the most dangerous… Is evidence enough for me of their intention to deceive.

  19. Gamas Heet says:

I am now encouraging all who are lord of their life to not speak…do your thing.

Don’t pray or ask the Lord to help you. You got it..

    You aren’t needed. Lol..trust me.

Don’t expect the Lord to deliver you of a rebellious spirit.

I really believe people have a boring walk with the Lord because they are their lord.

Ask them about a super natural encounters….silence. No wonder their witness is weak.

Poster don’t speak. Blabber your tongue on FB.

  20. Jim Vaughan says:

Most churches that believe tongues is a sign of new birth, say it shows the Spirit, however, the Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit distributes gifts as He sees fit. NO-ONE has every gift. Does this church have more than 2-3 use the gift at a time? Is there an intrepreter? 1 Corinthians 14:5 (NKJV): “I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.” 1 Corinthians 14:26–27 (NKJV): “Let all things be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.”

1 Corinthians 14:18–19 (NKJV): “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; 19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.”
Be carful that the gift doesn’t supersede the Giver. If it’s all about Jesus, tongues should point to Him alone. Which means orderly as the Bible says and only if there is an interpretation.

  21. Richie Porter says:

Jeremiah 29:11-14 if you are truly searching you will find him.
How did you get saved there?

  22. Kathy DeVoss says:

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved

  23. Matt Willis says:

    Saved from what?

  24. Richard McCauley says:

There Were tongues of fire at Pentecost…..but it was a Miracle of the EAR not the tongue. In another place Paul writes it’s senseless to speak in tongues w/out an Interpreter! For how can it Edify me if I don’t even understand it! Jesus said, Unless You become like these little children, You will NEVER SEE The Kingdom of God! Last time I checked little children don’t understand “tongues”!

  25. Stewart MacLeod says:

Then they promote a works based salvation, it says in Corinthians that “do all speak in tongues?”

  26. Micki Shilvock says:

Tongues do not save, Jesus alone does! Believers who do not speak in tongues are just as forgiven and saved as a believer who does have the gift on tongues. It the belief, not the tongues, that is most important

  27. David Stacks says:

I’ve seen people speak in tongues with an interpreter there.I believe they were filled with the spirit. I believe In the Father the Son and the Holy Ghost. I keep my relationship with God simple. Stick to the basics. Law of some churches will ruin that.

  28. Jim Hill says:

How can a spiritual gift one might receive after salvation be a requirement of salvation? Always wondered about that.

  29. Lorna Aniwasal Kihel Borbon says:

The Gospel is simple but men are making it difficult and complicated. Salvation is by grace alone through faith not by speaking other languages or making miracles.

  30. Arthur Adam Haglund says:

Also, your doctrine is that adult baptism, the baptizer MUST say, “In the name of JESUS”. If the words are, “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost” then the baptism is false and the person remains unsaved

    Correct?

well, first off, the Bible does not state, as they often claim, that, “Baptism of the Holy Ghost is evidenced by the speaking in tongues”

I knew quite a few UPI/Apostolic members. and experienced more than one conversation with them.

Let us go to the ONLY place in scripture that tells us of the local congressional meeting, touching tongues:

1Co 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
1Co 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
1Co 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
1Co 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
1Co 14:6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
1Co 14:7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
1Co 14:8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
1Co 14:9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
1Co 14:10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
1Co 14:11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
1Co 14:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
1Co 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
1Co 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
1Co 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
1Co 14:16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
1Co 14:17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
1Co 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
1Co 14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
1Co 14:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
1Co 14:21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
1Co 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
1Co 14:23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
1Co 14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
1Co 14:25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
1Co 14:26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
1Co 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
1Co 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

Let us look at the foundational passage where tongues is taught:

1Co 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
1Co 12:2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
1Co 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
1Co 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
1Co 12:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
1Co 12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
    1Co 12:8 For ***to one*** is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; ***to another*** the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
    1Co 12:9 ***To another*** faith by the same Spirit; ***to another*** the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
1Co 12:10 ***To another*** the working of miracles; ***to another*** prophecy; ***to another*** discerning of spirits; ***to another*** divers kinds of tongues; ***to another*** the interpretation of tongues:
1Co 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally
    ***AS HE WILL***.

1Co 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
1Co 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
    1Co 12:29 , 30
    Are all apostles? (NO!)
    are all prophets? (NO!)
    are all teachers? (NO!)
are all workers of miracles? (NO!)
Have all the gifts of healing? (NO!)
do all speak with tongues? (NO!)
    do all interpret? (NO!)

    1Co 12:31
But (ALL) covet earnestly the best gifts:

and yet shew I unto you a ***more excellent way***

The Bible calls the UPI/Apostolic doctrine of tongues being a sign of baptism of the Holy Spirit, FALSE!

  31. Paul Gray says:

There were people in the book of acts who had been baptized in johns baptism. When asked if they had received the Holy Ghost they replied they hadn’t even heard of it. They then received the Holy Spirit. They were saved but then went further like one scripture says “from glory to glory”.

  32. Jim Lee says:

To be baptized in the name of Jesus has nothing to do with a formula or what words the baptizer uses.” In the name of” means “in identification with” and “upon the authority of.” Otherwise I Corinthians 1: 12-15 would make absolutely no sense. 12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
    14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
Stick with the clear teaching of the Bible and avoid forcing the “Oneness” views on your theology. They are absurd.

  33. Dan Waenet says:

Tongues is a gift. The Holy Spirit can give you other gifts. The only way to prove salvation is works of love

  34. Ismael Lopez Lara says:

A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

  35. John Carson says:

    Here’s what I wrote on that verse….

  36. Dave Van Huffel says:

Gifts (plural) of the Holy Spirit are more than speaking in tongues.

  37. Julius Quiam says:

Speaking in tongues was a miracle but it had a purpose in Acts 2. It’s for the jews to understand. It does not save a person.

Peter said REPENT and everyone be BAPTISE and you shall recieve the gift of the Holy Ghost. That’s what they did to be saved.

  38. John Carson says:

John 3:5 needs to be read in its context…. “Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”” Now look at the next verse where Jesus explains the difference between “water” and “the Spirit”…. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”” (verse 6‬)‬‬

Water is attributed to flesh, NOT water baptism. To insert water baptism into the text is to do some crazy textual gymnastics.

  39. Ramiro Cervantes says:

Jesus told the criminal on the cross “Today you will be with me in paradise!”
He did not say…”Let’s get off the cross so you can pray to speak in tongues”
    Or
“So I can water baptize you!”

  40. Carol Strong says:

the just shall live by faith not by supposedly speaking in tongues which for the majority is just gobbly gook

  41. Tarlus Taylor says:

Brother that church is teaching heresy you need to leave that church

  42. Marilyn Hogue says:

John spoke in tongues. You can too. It’s a special time between you and God. You can get the gift not only by asking but YOU HAVE TO simply believe in the gift of tongues. It’s usually a lack of belief because it’s clearly biblical. So is healing etc. So let’s just believe and get busy making a better world because of whatJesus did when He said “It is finished!” There is absolutely nothing more He can do for you now. It’s your turn to simply BELIEVE the word of God . Isn’t that what Christianity is suppose to be about?

  43. Daniel Suboan says:

I practiced speaking in tongues..to edify my spirit..when there is gathering it should be interpreted and that’s prophecy.. speaking in tongues or (unknown tongues) is to edify your spirit but prophecy edifies the body of Christ (in the Book of 1 Corinthians) (to some it is weird or demonic (I will not condemned them because they never experienced it).
But in the issue of Salvation, I think they have a problem..the Death of Christ sufficient enough for our salvation… spiritual gifts is bestowed by God to the church to equipped the believers..(1Cornthians) has no relation to salvation..
I’ll give you an idea..to give you dicescernment what is being cult..the Bible then plus (or other testament e.g Bible + book of Mormon) or Salvation plus (church Membership- they will say you will not be saved if you are not member of church etc, speaking in tongues – if your not Baptized with Holy Spirit you will not saved or water baptism – they will say to you, you will not be saved if you are not baptized in our church) that’s totally wrong..water baptism, Holy Spirit Baptism and church membership is only to follow in obedience to your faith in Christ Jesus..is not in the issue of Salvation..

  44. Nishant Jashwant says:

Any church which follows Oneness Pentecostal doctrine is heretical and should be avoided

  45. Lawrence Solomon says:

    I find speaking in tongues helpful especially when I need edifying…Jude 1 v 20

  46. Lawrence Apitz says:

I suggest you leave and go to an evangelical church. the oneness people are in a state of deception on the godhead. Jesus is not the father. the apostles did baptize in some trinitarian form because the immediate church 145 AD that is all they did.

  47. Holly Brasseaux says:

I suggest you read the Bible seeking God to reveal the truth to you.

  48. Candice Marie says:

The bible speaks of divers or various gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:10 that were distributed to some.
Toungues is not a requirement of proof of salvation.
Anything more than professing in the Lord JESUS CHRIST and believing in your heart that JESUS is LORD and came to die for the redemption of the sins of the world to receive Salvation is heretical teaching.

  49. Lawrence Apitz says:

you may find out some day that translations do not always mean what they say this is one of them. God does not create divisions in the church the enemy does.
