I spoke with a friend who says he believes in God and that we are his children but does not believe heaven and hell are a real tangible place but more of a contextual state of being. I asked him who Jesus was and He said a prophet as we all are and denied him being God. How do I reengage with Him to speak truth without forcing the talk to my side or his?

I would ask what he thinks of the Bible
Most people that think that way.. Think the Bible “is just a book” and”written by man” and “been translated so many times”..
So if he doesn’t believe in the written word of God that’s where you would probably start.. if he claims to be a believer in God
So.. ask him where he thinks Jesus is now.
He’s not a believer then
You can’t lead people where they don’t want to go.
Take him to Fulfilled Prophecy, try General Allenby Jerusalem 1917 http://www.cai.org/bible-studies/deliverance-old-jerusalem
Say that you would like to re-engage with him regarding who Jesus Christ is.
Say that you would like to reference the Bible – because it is the first book that our saviour is mentioned- as it is the source material that tells of his coming and the purpose of his coming and tells us who he is.
Tell him that it matters not what and who he believes Jesus Christ is. Jesus Christ is God.
Since the prophets are those who God selects to speak his words, Jesus could not be a prophet because he is the God that the prophets received words from.
Jesus Christ is God made flesh so as to spill his blood as the ultimate and eternal sacrifice so that our sins are forgiven and we are made righteous if we believe in Jesus Christ.
I’m sorry that I couldn’t be of more help.
Prayer for what you must say to him.
Tell him that he is not a believer if he doesn’t believe that Christ is God.
Lukewarm Christian.
I mean, I hardly see why his belief about the afterlife is relevant. If Heaven and Hell by Ehrman has any weight then most Christian’s thoughts of the afterlife are completely wrong.
Ask him what does his thinks of the claim that Jesus made about himself when he said in John 14:6 I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the father expect through him? Also ask him if he believes in God and what are God attributes and where does he get those facts from? Ask him is God loving so is Jesus,Is God good so is Jesus and so on and so forth.Try to lay a foundation of common terms and you will see that it will lead to jesus and the understanding of God that only Christ has displayed.
It sounds like he needs to hear the gospel. I would bring up his thoughts on what the cross really means to him. Then I would bring up the law. He sounds like a stony-ground hearer. Pray for guidance. God Bless ??
If you don’t believe what the bible says then you don’t believe in the God of the Bible or His plan of salvation through His son Jesus. In other words your friend believes in a false god of his own creation which makes Him guilty of idolatry. He needs to repent of his false beliefs and put His faith in Christ Jesus.
Ask him to consider if Jesus died on the cross, if he was a prophet and sinful man, how could Jesus be a cover all for the sins of humanity. For if Jesus was like the rest of the prophets who died, they would be dying for their own sin (Romans 3:23).
But, only a perfect sacrificial lamb, like God, could be a coverall.
Or you can try: Jesus said before Abraham was I AM. “I AM” or (YHWH) is how God identified his proper name. And we know God has plurality, meaning more than one person (Genesis 3:23).
So when Jesus identified himself as the eternal I AM to the Pharisees, he was either God, or a blaspheming false prophet. He cannot be both.
He said he believes there are many ways to the one true God. I said Jesus is the only way, the truth, and the life. He said, I dont know what I don’t know so this is my belief. He seems as if he would like direction if it was compelling
Compelling to his closed eyes and heart, not as if the Bible isnt compelling
You don’t. Use the words of God.
Yes, use the Bible. If he believes in the Bible, which is the divinely inspired Word of God (II Timothy 3:16), there are numerous passages which prove the truth of the trinity (that God is three persons (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spririt in one being)
Matthew 28:19 – Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
John 10:30 – I and [my] Father are one.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
Your friend has Jehova witness doctrine!!
You can show him scripture. If he doesn’t believe the Bible, than her might be or if reach. Isaiah 9:6 is old testament so he cannot say it was Jesus influenced its writing. It clearly names the son/child as the father, son, spirit. John 1 1-4 clearly says Jesus was God and the timeline also. Jesus was there in the beginning.
Sometimes you’re the only Bible people read. You can give him my Facebook. I’ll be glad to go over many many verses, not opinions, if he believes the Bible is the true word of God.
Take him to the Law
Define truth. Make sure you’re both on the same page.
Just believing that there is God will not work, one must know Him
“First Commandment – You shall have no other gods before me.” If he believes in God, then he should believe the commandments. It sounds like he’s creating a god in his own image and denying Gods true word.
he denied/rejected the deity of Christ –> u dont –> Pray for him –> leave him alone –> keep it movin?
Daniel 2 is the best place to start to show that the Bible is historically true. And build from there. All scripture is given by inspiration. The Bible has been tested by many great scholars over many years and it will continue to stand the test of time. Most of all be his friend as D.L.Moody once said out of 100 men 1 will read the Bible and 99 will read you.
May God bless you in your efforts to save this man’s life.

Matthew 16:13-17, John 14:1-11(v. 11, “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.”)
I’m almost done reading a great book that digs into the deity of Christ called More Than a Carpenter by an apologist named Josh McDowell that might present useful information on the subject for you.
