Have you tried arguing with a young child. You
get no where. It takes the assurssion of authority or a foundation of past trust to vet by the foolishness. Some would so war as an example. Though we have reasons iymt often boils down to hurt pride. War often solves nothing and just creates more problems in the long run.
Along that line also using the faulty logic of of fool just confirms his line of thinking.
Maybe that you don’t patronize a fool or give any reason to think he is being reasonable..
PULPIT COMMENTARY: Verse 5. – “Answer a fool according to his folly. This maxim at first sight seems absolutely antagonistic to the purport of the preceding verse; but it is not so really. The words, “according to his folly,” in this verse mean, as his folly deserves, in so plain a way as is expose it, and shame him, and bring him to a better mind. Lest he be wise in his own conceit; thinking, it may be, that he has said something worth hearing, or put you to silence by his superior intelligence.”

The proverb calls for discernment. The fool is exposed by his question. So do not answer his question with evidence. Show him his question is futile.
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him (Pro 26:4).
In other words, don’t really engage in an argument with a fool. It’s a waste of time. There are some people you should never argue with. So don’t answer the fool according to his folly. They make some fool remark and if you make some fool remark back, you’re answering the fool according to his folly and he begins to classify you in his category.
Proverbs is a collection of mostly context-free thoughts of King Solomon.
In this case, he said three phrases that are written together, and two about answering a fool
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.
This is a coin in the fools povel, you are just ike him
The other side is that if you don’t, then he thinks he is too wise for you.
WE see this quite often on pages like this when a person simply disconnects, and the fool will then proclaim that one who took the high ground is scared, ignorant, or whatever.
This, is different than the hit and run disconnect or the accuse and flee person, both of whom receive rightful and correct identifacation of their cowardly behavior.
