   What do we know about the New Testament?

   1. Jesus may have been born around 4 BC. (That is when King Harod the Great died) So, he would have been 30 around 28 AD which is when he may have been killed. But Note: in Luke 2:2 mentions Quirinus becomes Governor of Syria which was around 6 AD. Which is problematic in determining when Jesus was born because of this 10 year difference.

   2. After Jesus died, sometime around 28-33 AD, nothing was written about him until Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthians around 54 AD. That is possibly 21 years later. So, between these years people simply spoken about him. This is known as the oral tradition. If you have ever played the game ‘telephone’ we know how stories can change from person to person, from culture to culture and over time.

   3. We do not have his original letters. In fact we do not even have a copy of the copy. We have copies of the original written hundreds of years later. Copies of the copies of the copies of the copies, etc., and we know they have changed over time; because what copies we do have; no two copies are the same, they are all have differences from each other.

   We also know verses were added to some of the original text, for example, the woman caught in adultery in John 8:1-11 is not in the oldest manuscripts. After Mark 16:8 is also not in the oldest manuscripts. etc.

   4. The original manuscripts of the Gospels did not having any names on them. The names were placed on them by the church possibly around 300 years later. Mark, thought to be the first Gospel, was thought to be written in the late 60’s AD. perhaps 68 AD. 35 years after Jesus is said to have died. Did the stories change during this time? The differences in each of the copies would suggest it had.
