The disciples were either involved in the greatest conspiracy of all time or were simply eyewitnesses who were telling the truth. The latter is by far the most reasonable conclusion.

When you consider that all but two of the original 13 were martyred, it would be unreasonable to think that they were that committed to a lie. It is one thing to believe a lie and to be willing to die for it (many false religions and ideologies today). It is another thing to know something is a lie and be willing to die for it.
