New York City confirms 18 deaths during prolonged Arctic cold
18 cold-related deaths were confirmed in New York City as of February 11, following a prolonged stretch of Arctic air that gripped the city from mid-January through early February. Fatalities occurred during a 9-day period of subfreezing temps that ended February 2, with wind chills falling below −25°C (−13°F) on multiple mornings. Most victims were found outdoors.

Tropical Cyclone Gezani has killed at least 31 people since it made landfall near Toamasina, on the eastern coast of Madagascar, on February 10, damaging and destroying around 80% of the city. Around three dozen were injured, with multiple still missing as recovery operations continue across the island.
