Be Sad on Purpose

Grace without a full understanding of sin is a damning grace for it does not heal our relationship with God.

Here’s a possible seed for a sermon or personal (Good Friday?) devotional…

Subject: The Day of Atonement

o Text: Leviticus 23:26-32

o Thesis: There are times to be sad on purpose, v. 26

o #1: There are times that you must be sad on purpose (You shall afflict your souls)

o #2: There are times that you must be sad on purpose together–as a family, church, nation, v. 29 (Shall be cut off from his people)

o #3: There are times that everyone must be purposefully sad, v.31 (You shall do no manner of work.) In other words society shuts down; there are no amenities – guests, visitors, animals, everyone is sad.

o Application: This passage reminds us of just how drastically sin affects our relationship with God and with each other and calls us to be intentionally repentant. (Grace without a full understanding of sin is a damning grace for it does not heal our relationship with God.)

The ONE THING for today: The Passion of Christ is a picture of what sin looks like from God’s perspective.
