Getting In The Word
“The grass withers, the flowers fade, but the word of our God remains forever.”-Isaiah 40:8
Have you ever heard someone say, “I will get to it when I feel like it”? As a husband, if I ever said that to my wife, there would be some major consequences!
Growing up, my mom would ask me to take the trash out, or put the dishes up after dinner and my initial response would always be “I don’t feel like it.” Let’s talk about the word “feel” for a minute, shall we…
Feel (verb) – to be persuaded of (something) on the basis of intuition, emotion, or other indefinite grounds…to become aware of…to seek or explore by touching.
I feel like we are raised in a society to teach us how to go off of a “feeling.” Do you know how dangerous it is to go off of a feeling? “I don’t feel like making the bed today….I don’t feel like taking the trash out…I don’t feel like loving my wife today…I feel like sleeping all day…I don’t feel like talking to this person, because they spread rumors about me 15 years ago in college…” or how about the most popular “i don’t feel like it” quote – “I don’t feel like reading God’s Word.”
If you wait on a feeling to do anything, especially read the Word of God, you are going to die trying. Never trust a feeling! What do you think Jesus said before He died on the cross? “Well…Father…I don’t feel like dying today. Can we take a rain check, please?” No! Jesus Himself even didn’t feel like doing stuff, especially dying on a cross for the sin of the world! Jesus’ response to it was, “Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42).
What about when David said, “My heart leaps for joy and I will give Him thanks through song” (Psalm 28:7). David didn’t say his heart leaps because of joy, but for joy! David had people after his very life, yet, he chose to say things like that.
People, please do not wait to read the Word of God based on some feeling you have. If you do that, it might be too late and you will come up short. Know that God’s Word is eternal, it will never fail you. You might think your situation terrible, but I promise you that there is a God who knows your situation, gave His Son for your very soul, and gave you His Word that can and will forever guide you.
As the church, we need to get back to the Word of God. Tired from a long day at work? Read the Word. Busy at work and the only break you have all day is your lunch break? Read the Word. Can’t seem to make time to do anything, especially spending time with God? Read the Word.
We HAVE to get back to the Word of God! We have forgotten what it means to be a Christian…which literally means “little Christ”.
Do yourself a favor and read the Word! You will never thirst again!
