It is good to see Tommy Smith. I haven’t seen him in person in years. Maybe I will now that I’m here again. The Indonesian man behind the podium prayed in Indonesian, and Tommy Smith translated. He did a pretty good job of translating. Sometimes it was a bit dynamic equivalence, leaving out a word or two but getting across the general message. (I don’t speak for genuineness, etc.of someone’s tongues, but) when the Indonesian gentleman spoke in tongues, Tommy Smith followed up with speaking in tongues. (Interpreting the tongue would have been pretty cool.
That’s what I think was happening. I suppose the Indonesian man could have been speaking a local language I don’t know that has a lot of repeated syllables, but it didn’t sound like that to me. I have heard tongues in Indonesia where I didn’t know if the speaker were speaking one of the hundreds or thousands of local languages or speaking in tongues until the interpretation came and I knew what was going on. In my experience, interpreting tongues is rare in Indonesia. I dont know if I’ve seen it in GBI. Maybe once in a smaller meeting. I have seen it in other groups a bit.

no, I was impressed with Tommy Smith and the impromptu speaking as the overseer spoke in tongues. Church of God people could not have done that. They would have just stood there silent.
There was a translation but why can’t I response be quick enough to give an impromptu interpretation. I aspire to that quickness. It requires acting by the Spirit not entertain thoughts and doubts.
Lord make me quick! doubt slows down quickness.

My concern with the video is this: the Indonesian preacher is praying in what appears to be uninterpreted tongues. It’s possible the portion of the Indonesian prayer that follows is the interpretation. The same seems to be true of the interpreters prayer in tongues. So what is the proper way of an interpreter (interpreting with ‘the undrestanding’) handling the person praying shifting into tongues? He should either get the interpretation and give it or let someone else interpret. If that doesn’t happen, he could start up after the Indonesian guy starts speaking Indonesian.
Shouldn’t prayers in tongues like this be interpreted, or else the speaker in tongues keep silent in the church (I Corinthians 14:27-28.)

A lot of the GBI (Gereja Bethel Indonesia) churches, the COG denominational churches in Indonesia, will set up with a mother church that has branches that operate under the senior pastor at the headquarters. Bethany used to be the biggest. I don’t know about now. They had some really large number of members, like 80,000. Some of these churches would offer support to start church plants, and others just wanted a commission and didn’t offer much of anything. Back probably around 2000 or so, there was a move to not allow local church brands on the signs like “Bethany” or whatever else. Bethany’s senior pastor in Surabaya opposed it. The pastor in Jakarta wanted it. Bethany started its own denomination. Most of the Jakarta churches stayed in GBI.
I was in Bethany for a while before this in Jakarta. They called themselves Charismatic (“Karismatik”). They had centralized, well trained musicians that they’d farm out as worship leaders to different congregations. Some of them would say, “And now everyone, speak in tongues.” Much of the congregation would say ‘bababa’ or ‘bada bada bada bada bada’ at the same time. I refrained for Biblical reasons (“If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord”).
I don’t know if the GBI churches that were Bethany in Jakarta still do that after the split. I’m scheduled to speak in another GBI that I don’t think has ties with Bethany in August, so Lord willing, I’ll get to see to see if that congregation does that.
