Am plowing through a book now by Ross Douthat where he does some deep analysis of recent history in the church world. While he discusses the history and potential of many churches; what he said about the Church of God, The Seventh Day Adventist and The Church of Christ, caught my attention. These three movements have about the same number of followers, hovering at around one million adherents.
He made the case that these three movements and a few others had a built in limitation to further growth. The Church of Christ with it’s no musical instruments, The Adventists with their insistence on Saturday worship and the Church of God with it’s call to a separatist life style had inadvertently cut themselves off from all but a small segment of the population.
If he is correct then maybe the COG should give more emphasis to building from the inside, enriching the experience of those now in attendance and building a strong brotherhood.
