Who are we becoming?
That’s a question that we need to constantly ask of ourselves, both personally and as a church body. From generation to generation if a church doesn’t look within themselves to answer this question in both new and old ways then it will eventually wither and die.
Knowing who it is that you are becoming gives your life purpose.
There was a girl who recently began attending college. While there, she met a guy who really wanted her to start going out with him. But this guy had a bad reputation, both in how he treated girls and in what he wanted from them. Finally the girl looked him in the eyes, and with passion and finality in her voice she declared, “I know where I want to go in life. And you will nothelp me get there.”
Core values show us who we’re becoming. Like God’s Word (especially when they come from God’s Word) they are a light unto our path. So I want to present to you five core values of Mendenhall Church of God – who we are, who we’re becoming, a light unto our path.
PRAYER: Prayer, in its basic sense, is simply communication with our Heavenly Father. We believe that prayer changes us. We believe that prayer changes situations. When difficult situations arise in our life, we gather together with our brothers and sisters in Christ and pray.
WORSHIP: Praise and worship (along with prayer) creates an atmosphere of faith where God is welcome to bring change and restoration in our lives. We worship freely. We desire the presence of our Heavenly Father.
GENEROSITY: Jesus called His followers to be generous, giving people. Not only to the church, but to those in need. We desire to become people with open hearts and open hands.
DISCIPLESHIP: Jesus asked the question: Why do you call Me Lord if you don’t do what I say? Discipleship is the process of becoming like Jesus. Through baptism, study, prayer, and in practical ways, growing more like Him means everything to us.
FAMILY: According to the New Testament, believers are a family with even together bonds than blood. We endeavor to love and serve our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Who are we, and who are we becoming? Men and women who are prayerful, who freely worship and praise, who give generously, who are becoming more like Jesus through discipleship, and who recognize that they are part of the family of God.
