Well the bible never gives an answer to that question. Men just count the ages of the patriarchs and history and come up with a guess. However it is ambiguous. For instance in verse 1 of Genesis 1 God creates the heavens and earth but the days don’t start until light is created and separated from darkness. How long was the earth around before the countdown? How long did it take to make? See? It’s speculative and you can only go off of theories and assumptions to make a case either way.

No one can know unless we have a time machine. I am not under the belief that the world is 6000 years old, and I have sufficient evidence for that belief with evidence of the cultural context of the Bible.

Why does it matter? If you believe the Genesis creation account, why is it important? The age of the earth is irrelevant to the to the historic Christian truth claim, which centers on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Nobody is going to go to hell if they believe the earth is older than you say. They will if they deny the historic truth claim. Jesus believed the OT was true (as do I). Don’t fall on your sword over the age of the earth. Fix your eyes on Jesus and establish that relentlessly. That’s worth your time, and theirs.
