I often hear the modalists or arians on this page say that the early church didn’t believe in the trinity. Irenaeus (130-200 AD) the bishop of Lyons said, “So God became man, and the Lord himself saved us, giving us the sign of the Virgin..” This was early church history. This man was a follower of Polycarp who sat at the feet of the Apostle John who was obviously trinitarian. 1 John 5:7 “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the **Father**, the Word, and the **Holy Spirit**; and these three are one.” Nicea just cemented what our early Catholic fathers had laid down.

Modalists and Arians also won’t tell you that their ideas were condemned at synod and council and that is why they are considered cultists and heretics to this day.

1 John 5:7 is not found in any Greek manuscript before the 14th century so it is not really scripture. That’s why you won’t find it in most modern versions of the Bible.
