I received this book recently from Amazon and it is a thoroughly researched book by Thomas Burton and published by University of Tennessee Press. The Church of God is prominent in the book with many pioneers named in association with serpent handling.
One of the leading men in the movement associated with snake handling was a COG Pastor, George Hensley in the east Tennessee region. He was associated with the Dolly Pond COG
I had a cousin by marriage (Cash Amburgy) who lost a thumb after being bitten by a rattlesnake in a snake handling service service in Kentucky.

In the early days of the Pentecostal movement, they tried everything they could find in scripture. Without proper training and understanding, they made some mistakes. God miraculously protected believers as they attempted to prove The Word of God.
We have arrived at a safe place in the Word of God today and we don’t need God’s protection anymore. We are doing fine without Him!!
