While I’m not certain of the decent into hell, I am aware that in the Greek language there is no punctuation.
I have heard it explained that if you place the comma AFTER “today” it can change the interpretation.
“I assure you today, you will be with me in paradise “
With this punctuation he may have been talking about a time in the future.

Scripture that is used as proof text is 1 Peter 3:18-20

but made alive in the spiritual realm.

He didn’t go to hell. Jesus described the grave or hades as having a gulf between the damned and those in Abraham’s bosom (paradise) in his parable of Lazarus and the rich man.

Jesus went to the place of the Righteous dead called Abraham’s bosom where all who died before the Crucifixion stayed. Called Paradise, empty now as they knew Him who paid for their Sins with his Life. Millions of occupants including Job, David, Lazarus, Abraham, Joseph, Nebochadnezzer. Abraham’s bosom, where the Righteous dead dwelt. Luke 16:20-26. ‘And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.’ Mat 27:51-53 KJV.

The Greek does not use a comma. So read the verse without one. “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father” (John 20:17). A full three days after His death, Jesus states he had not yet gone to heaven.
He also stated, He would lay in the grave for three days and three nights (Matthew 12:40).
I do believe, however that Jesus descended to Hell as He brought up the saints with Him. I can only guess this did not require three days to get the job done.

I think we have to be cautious whenever we press biblical text for exact precision and consistency. The Bible was written in a culture with literary traditions often very different from our own. I’m not saying we shouldn’t address apparent contradictions, just that we are careful we’re not applying our modern standards too haphazardly.

He went down to Abraham’s bosom to release the captives free. It was located NEAR the hell, but they are not the same place. There was a big gulf in between.

He went to Abrahams Busom, which is next to Hell, but not Hell. We see this when one person in Hell is speaking across the pit to Abraham, trying to plead with him to go across the pit, but Abraham couldn’t do because of the pit and the separation between them.

In 1 Peter 3:19, it talks about Jesus who by the same spirit by which He is raised from the dead goes and preaches to the lost spirits in prison. This text has been used as the principal proof text to say that Jesus, at some point after His death, generally believed to be between His death and His resurrection, went to hell. Some people say that He went into hell to experience the fullness of the magnitude of suffering-the full penalty for human sin in order to give complete atonement for sin. That is regarded by some as a necessary element of Christ’s passion.

1 Peter 3:18-20a gives us the answer. “Because even Christ once suffered concerning sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God; indeed being put to death in the FLESH, but made alive in the SPIRIT, in which also, going in to the spirits in prison, He then proclaimed to disobeying ones….”
It seems that Jesus’ flesh went to paradise with the flesh of the thief, but Jesus’ Spirit went to preach to those in prison. It’s easy to forget that Jesus wasn’t only human like we are. He was also the divine Son of God. Anyway, that’s what I know about it.

I think I heard that Paradise and Sheol are in the same space and they act as the dead’s resting place until the ultimate resurrection and new heavens/earth and the lake of fire

Both paradise and hell were part of Abraham’s Bosom – Luke 16:22. No one could go to Heaven until after the resurrection. Jesus had to first cleanse the mercy seat in Heaven before we could go there- Hebrews 9

Jesus didn’t go into Hell, that is a poor translation. He went into Sheol, the Grave. There are 2 sides to Sheol or Hades in Greek, Abraham’s bosom or paradise, and a place of torment. See Luke 16:19-31. There are no sinners in Hell yet because Judgment Day hasn’t happened yet. Not until then, when God separates the sheep from the goats, does anyone get cast into the Lake of Fire with the Beast and his False Prophet. Jesus told the thief on the cross he would be with him in Paradise today, was going to Abraham’s bosom.

What is translated as “Hell” in some bibles is Hades. In Jewish thought Hades had two compartments Paradise (for the righteous dead, also known as Abraham’s bosom) and Hades proper (for the wicked dead). Jesus promised the thief “today I will be with you in Paradise”. Scripture also tells us that God did not leave Jesus’s soul in Hades but resurrected him. Acts 2:27
“7For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,

It could be argued that he “descended into hell” on the cross. He was forsaken by the father (for our sake). That part of the apostles creed does come after the part about him being crucified, but I’m not sure the implication is that he descended into hell after the crucifixion.

Jesus descended into Paradise (He told the thief on the cross that He would see him there that day), which shares the same word as what we think of as Hell. When you see a Creed saying that He descended into Hell, they are using what is – to modern ears – an unusual definition of that word. The word “paradise” occurs 3 times. In Luke 23:43, Jesus speaks to that thief. In 2 Corinthians 12:4, Paul describes a man who was caught up to Paradise. Revelation 2:7, the Tree of Life is in the Paradise of God. So, the place Jesus went when He died was the same place as the Tree of Life.

Ephesians 4:10, “He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.” He descended to earth and payed for our sin on the cross, he then descended further into hell and took the keys of death and hades Rev. 1:18 meaning he took authority over them. And in doing so, (Col. 1:18) “And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” He became the firstborn from among the dead so that we who follow by faith will to be raised to life in him. When Jesus said that he would be in paradise he told the truth. Our world is subject to time. In the eyes of eternity everything is completed. We know how everything will end… Revelation.

Shaun Greene, just for some clarification. Nowhere in the scripture does it say Jesus descended into hell. That came as a result of the apostle’s Creed. They believed they needed an explanation as to what to do with Jesus’ soul. Hence the “descended into hell.” Some will claim 1 Peter 4:6, but this is simply not in koine Greek.
Now, you post something that is not in scripture asking people to provide proof of another completely different verse. The two are not co-mingled.
