In the book of Matthew chapter 5 Jesus tells us to shine our lights and show our good deeds , then in chapter 6 He says to hide our good deeds when we are tempted. So how do we know when and when not to?

the same holy spirit that was in Jesus Christ, and him doing the correct will of the father, should also guide the believer that has received the Son and the Spirit to do the will correctly in the father! Our actions are not a part from the Holy Spirit, they never should be. But we do make mistakes and it is possible for us to fail.
the same holy spirit that was in Jesus should be in our lives when we come across moments in life, difficulties, to do what is right and good. Hallelujah

Chapter 5 basically is for Christians being Salt and Light to a lost world. If we are followers of Jesus, then our lives should be a reflection of God’s grace. A lot of people are living a life of darkness away from God, we should be examples of how God changes people and by our actions people can see the God and in fact, lead people to Him that they also become Salt and Light.
Chapter 6 is pointing out the motives of people when they do “good works”… these are fake… just how the Pharisees are… being hypocrites. The reason they are doing good is not to praise God or glorify God or bring people closer to God but rather their motivations is to gain worldly praise. A Christian can always donate, volunteer for things BUT no need to create an ad or announce it that you are doing “good”, because if one does that… it is feeding once pride rather than magnifying God.

The key words in chapter 6 are “to be seen.”
If you’re fasting or bringing a gift, it’s impossible to hide. But Jesus uses a lot of hyperbole to contrast with those just wanting attention.
