First of all, let me state that I do not personally know this dear brother and his wife. There is much involved and I can only give my assessment as I understand it. It seems to me that the CoG denomination made the grave mistake of allowing him to purchase the old Highland Park property without it belonging to the CoG, when in actuality, I am sure it was CoG money that purchased it; and by this, I mean that it was not some outsider who purchased it for him, but current CoG people who gave their financial support. We know that many ministers get their start and assistance from the CoG until they get large enough to leave it. Did this brother leave over some doctrinal difference (the only real reason a person should resign) that the CoG once believed it, but no longer adhere to? No, he did not. He left because he said he was “directed by the Lord” to do so, but who really knows? He is the only one who truly knows and he must now convince others to join him as well if he is to be successful. I think his real issues were, (1) no longer desiring to be under the leadership of the CoG, and (2) not wanting to send his percentage of local church income to CoG General Offices and to their State Offices. In large churches, the sum of money sent to headquarters is a rather large amount of money and most pastors do not like to give it. They feel they could make better use of that money. I predict that in the future the CoG will see more of these churches leaving their denomination. We can see the CoG’s reaction already by implementing their “Affiliated Churches” program, something that I think will ultimately do away with present system as such. This “leaving” process usually starts with a local church no longer using the CoG name. They wish to identify themselves as an independent, which will become their ultimate goal. Next, the brother is correct regarding (1) Worship and (2) winning souls; however, he misses it over the fact that Jesus (Luke 10) commanded the disciples to “heal the sick, cast out devils and perform the miraculous.” These are three of many things that are lacking in the modern church. I pray God will bless the efforts of His people everywhere.

Kevin preached at the last Winterfest and I thought it was strange that the members of the executive committee were there. The final decision could have been made then!
