Good evening, and welcome to #ourCOG Daily Brief for July 14, 2026.

In U.S. news, the political landscape is grappling with the enduring question of accountability for politicians accused of misconduct, with voters and partisanship playing a significant role in who survives such allegations. Washington is also mourning the death of South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away on Saturday. Once a critic, Senator Graham became a crucial ally to President Donald Trump, especially on foreign policy matters, and was praised by the Senate Majority Leader as a strong advocate for freedom globally. Meanwhile, a debate on wealth taxation is gaining traction, with California set to vote on a one-time 5% tax on billionaires this fall. And on a lighter note, we got a glimpse into the dedicated volunteers making the World Cup possible, from transporting players to greeting fans, all while sporting neon uniforms and foregoing selfies. Internationally, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni appears to be strategically distancing herself from former President Trump, a calculated move rather than an act of spite. In Ukraine, the resilient city of Odesa, a vital global food security link, is preparing for a vibrant summer despite enduring its worst winter of Russian attacks, demonstrating a determination not just to survive but to build a better future. And in Côte d’Ivoire, the country faces the significant challenge of creating enough jobs for its remarkably young population.

Turning to our video segment, we’ve recently featured a “Celebration of the Life of Terence Ndishangong Mbibe,” “North Cleveland Live-Sunday, 07/12/2026,” and our “Sunday Morning Service.”

We checked our FaithNews RSS feed, but there’s no recent faith-based news to report at this time.

In prophecy news, the past few days have seen significant seismic activity, with strong, shallow earthquakes striking southeast of the Loyalty Islands and in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea, both on July 13th, though thankfully without tsunami threats. Earlier this week, Ukrainian FP-1 strike drones reportedly inflicted considerable damage on Russia’s Syzran oil refinery. And in global religious developments, Pope Leo XIV visited Istanbul’s Blue Mosque, reportedly approving of the significant Islamic site. Tensions also remain high in the Middle East, with Iran threatening retaliation against Israel, while President Trump has declared the ceasefire over, though he’s also opening the door to potential talks with Iran.

Finally, in Jewish history, looking back to July 14th: In 1086, Toirdelbach Ua Briain, the High King of Ireland, passed away. Notably, during his reign in 1079, Jews reportedly made their first appearance on the Emerald Isle. Fast forward to 1223, when Philip II Augustus, the King of France, died. He was known for his anti-Semitic policies, which included ordering the arrest of all Jews on a Saturday to easily extort ransom, canceling Christian debts to Jews, and seizing Jewish property.
