Statement: Roe v. Wade Overturned

Roe v. Wade Overturned

Cleveland, TN: In one of the most highly anticipated decisions in decades, the United States Supreme Court today overruled the 1973 Roe v. Wade case that has provided a constitutionally protected right to an abortion for almost 50 years. The Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization now allows the legality of abortion to be determined by each state.

In recognizing this momentous decision for human life, Dr. Timothy M. Hill, General Overseer of the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), issued the following statement:

“The body of Christ rejoices today with the release of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade. For some five decades, the church has prayed for this day to come. Millions and millions of babies have suffered the consequences of this senseless and inhuman decision. Finally, the Supreme Court has brought some reason into this ungodly and evil world that we call home.

When the Roe decision was handed down on January 22, 1973, the people of God, for the most part, stood silently by, not realizing that the Court of that day had created a constitutional right not recognized for hundreds of years before. As the moral and social consequences of abortion became more and more known in the years that followed, believers began to voice their concerns and opposition to the Court-created right to an abortion. But thanks to the grace and mercy of God, this egregious wrong perpetrated on our country has come to an end today.

However, the battle is not over. The fight for life now moves from the courts to the state legislative bodies across this country. I have been told that approximately half of the states have laws in place or readily available to greatly reduce or basically outlaw abortions all together. On the other hand, a good number of states have laws that would preserve the right to an abortion, even late-term abortions.

If we are going to be a life-giving and caring church, now is the time that we must step up and provide support to the more than 2,500 pregnancy resource centers across America, nonprofit facilities that provide assistance to women with unplanned pregnancies. Every one of the babies that will be saved by today’s Supreme Court decision is a creation of our almighty God. Jeremiah 1:5 clearly tells us that ‘before I formed you in the womb I knew you.’ Even as we applaud today’s decision, we must never stop fighting for life!!”

COVID-19 Vaccinations

Dr. Timothy M. Hill, General Overseer, Church of God

Cleveland, TN, September 10, 2021—As a result of a resurgence of COVID-19 and recent political statements, the vaccine issue is at the forefront of news and people’s thoughts.  There are significant opinions about taking the vaccine or not taking the vaccine.  As we speak to this issue, let me remind our constituency that the Church of God is comprised of a diverse group of people in both ministry and membership.  We have pastors, leaders, members, and some in the medical field who strongly believe the COVID-19 vaccines should be taken and some believe it should be mandated.  In contrast, there are equally others of our church family, supported by some in the medical field, who just as strongly stand against taking the vaccines and mandates.  In addition, there are those with beliefs between these two strong positions.  It is obvious the concerns of our church constituency cover the full spectrum of views regarding the COVID-19 vaccines.

In the final analysis, the only reasonable position that we as a church can take is that the decision to take the COVID-19 vaccines is a personal and individual health care decision that one should make prayerfully and in consultation with their doctor or health care professional.  As a church, I believe it is critical for each one of us individually to seek God’s wisdom as we make this important personal health care decision.

Regardless of one’s personal preference, may we be united as a body of believers to pray for one another around the world that God will heal and preserve us to fulfill the Great Commission.
