What are your thoughts on dancing being okay or not being okay when it comes to righteousness?

I just love worshipping God through dance. This is one of my favourite forms of worship. Like Brian A Dimond said, I dance before the Lord like David did. In the Psalms there are scriptures that speak of dance

God created music, He created dance. The problem comes when the beauty and intimacy of dance is misused in we know as exotic dancing (between unmarried).

You might need to dance to get certain things.

Like anything else; it isn’t dancing in general that’s wrong. Dancing is biblical; it can express joy, celebration, and praise in worship. What’s wrong is when we take things that can be done with purity and we pervert them.

I haven’t heard this topic come up since I left the Baptist church honestly, and that was in 2013. Maybe even before that. I grew up thinking it was wrong to dance to any degree, wasn’t till my later teens and 20’s I just stopped caring about what people had to say about it and started to look at what the Bible had(s) to say about topics. Dancing being one of them. Biblically David danced, so I see nothing wrong with it.

Wow, haven’t heard about this since my Baptist youth. I was told that it was bad and don’t go there and I never did. I think they may have had some legitimate concerns. Same with drinking and smoking. The Baptists kept their people on the straight and narrow path.

King David danced before the Lord. There is nothing against dancing in God’s Word. It’s legalism. However, dancing to glorify the Lord and worldly sexualized dancing are two entirely different things.

After the long months and struggles, the Ark had finally arrived in Jerusalem. And David in great excitement and in thanks and praise for the Lord, leaped and dance. He didn’t care that he could have looked ridiculous, his main concern was show his thanks and worship to God who had blessed him. Remember that at this time that David was king, that he was ridiculous and undignified. But Davis did not care. It amazing to worship in this way. Without reservations. Without limits. Without a care in the world except to show the proper worship to the One who deserves everything we have to give.

There’s many ways to dance appropriately. If a Christian says he doesn’t dance, like tap dance for example, it’s either because he’s been wrongly indoctrinated or doesn’t want to admit they aren’t very good

I’ve never been a very good dancer but I can understand why some would be against dancing that involves close physical contact between unmarrieds. Square dancing and ballet dancing are different issues. My answer is “not necessarily.”

David danced in such a way that his wife had a negative response to it & told him to stop…yet David replied he was simply dancing passionately for the Lord, and there is no record of God rebuking him.
I think it boils down to a heart issue. Assuming your dance is not inherited provocative in its nature. -

In 1998 my wife and I walked into a local Baptist church looking for a church home. My wife was wearing a pants suit. They came up to me and talked to me and shunned my wife. “Without love you are nothing but a clanging cymbal”. I don’t believe it’s anti scriptural at all. This is one of the reasons for the Calvary church movement of the late 60’s early 70’s. Hippies were shunned by the church so they formed their own churches.

Paul said “all things are permissible but not all things are beneficial” and the holy spirit is the one who gives us our convictions and we as individuals should not go against those. Dancing is a freedom in Christ.

Jesus turned the water into wine at a wedding celebration. Have you ever been to a Jewish wedding? It wouldn’t surprise me if Jesus didn’t dance at Cana.

I believe he means dancing suggestively or promiscuously as opposed to like dancing in a church or to worship God. The thing is our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and if we’re honoring God with our bodies then He is pleased. If our dancing is not honoring to God (in any way inappropriate) then it is not pleasing to the Lord.

I don’t recall seeing any dancing prohibition in the Bible, but clearly the dancing should most likely be tasteful, and not sexually suggestive. I have no scripture to support this opinion. ???

Depending on the dance. Seductive dancing is inappropriate for a Christian. It does not glorify God but does glorify sexual immorality. Everything we do should lead to Christ.

I am not against a man dancing with his wife.
I just know that in high school, the best and easiest way to get a young woman to put her body against mine was at a dance.
I don’t think I’m being a prude. But if a woman has any virtue, she would hesitate to do it. Especially with a stranger.

Didn’t someone’s daughter dance in the NT and the outcome was John the Baptist (John the Dipper among my religious friends) had his head cut off.It wasn’t a comment about dancing that lead to his execution though.

Dirty dancing and most forms of today’s dancing is wicked.
A few years back they came out with a movie where the kids used Bible verses to justify their school dance. Singing and dancing to the LORD is NOT the same thing as what you see in music videos, concerts, on tv, movies, etc. Most of the “music” and dancing in the last 70 years has been ungodly and shameful, especially for Christians. -
The form of dance is what matters in my opinion. Swing dance, fox trot, tap, waltz. Nothing wrong with those. It’s the dance they do today that is very suggestive and boarders obscene that is the problem.

It would be straight legalism to say that all dance is bad. It’s not even Biblical.

I hate dancing so much I’d rather shoot myself in the foot than step onto a dance floor. So while there’s nothing unchristian about it, I often play the righteousness card because I guess it still carries some weight with a lot of people. Otherwise its harmless. ?

Our bodies are made to move. Even little children sway or move to music when they hear it. David danced. We can dance, as John Watson said as long as it is not in appropriate.

It astounds me how many people can not seem to see a difference between people in the Bible dancing with joy in their heart to the Lord and dancing to ungodly music in the local pub or even in their own home. Do you truly not see the difference?

First of all, Christianity is not a superstitious belief. We don’t stop being Christians because we are enjoying dancing. God gave us minds by which we mature in knowledge as well as faith. So our understanding should always reflect His glory – not just in dancing but in everything we do. Therefore if it is a proper way to behave then by all means. If it is darkly sinister or sexually stimulated then one should question their motives. But…Dancing is joyful! It can also be exercise, which is a healthy activity….but it is also an art. There is beauty in the human body that God created and in the movement of expression can be very powerful and graceful and be a form of storytelling and performance.
Yet as Christians, dancing should be in accordance to a proper conduct, not overtly sexualized or in a party of drunkenness or drug use. For couples, it is a romantic way to enjoy one another’s company in the atmosphere of good music. It can also be when friends simply participate in dance groups, from swing dancing or ballroom dancing to square dancing and more! There’s ballet and country line dancing to tap dancing and many more styles.
So! Why would we not be able to enjoy wonderful music and allow our bodies to move to the wonder of our physical mobility? Listen, God created us! We have tremendous capabilities in our physical nature as well as the spiritual nature. Within art the two are combined in an expression of beauty.
There is nothing wrong or sinful if we are doing nothing wrong or sinful! Thus, to delight in our body moving in action and emotion to beautiful music is a perfect way to appreciate what God has given us. -

I don’t think God is so shallow as to think that dance or no dance is the definitive indicator of a person’s heart. Col 3:17 “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

If believers shouldn’t dance. Why was the book of Psalms written? Righteousness is a conduct the quality or state of being morally correct and justifiable and has nothing to do with Dancing. It tells you in the Bible, you can praise the Lord through dancing read Psalms 149:3. “A man after God’s on heart, David praised the Lord through dancing.”

The Bible states, raise your hands and rejoice, play the harp, blow the trumpets. It doesn’t say, get drunk, fornicate, have sex like animals or with animals.
