it is man made and often wrong

The church believes it does because if they contradict each other Tradition wins out. I also agree with Charlie.

Though erroneous, the Lord has a number that will yet come and receive Him in spirit and in truth – His way, His plan and His purpose.
There are hearts to be regenerated and are being regenerated here and there. -
Catechisms and the Bible are compared here

It is troubling to use scripture with Catholic members and have it so easily dismissed and/or belittled with something else.

I am a certified catechist and former Protestant. It is a summary of the deposit of faith over the last 2,000 years. The most common source in the footnotes by far are from the Sacred Scriptures. Other significant sources in its footnotes are from the early church fathers. Properly formed Catholics do not raise it higher than the Bible but they can and sometimes should raise it above the interpretation of Protestants where Protestant traditions conflict. The latest catechism was published in 1994. Between 1565 and 1994 there were only regional catechisms. The Council of Trent published a catechism that was universal to summarize the faith but they even then did not see it higher then the Bible or even St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica.
