Good evening, and welcome to #ourCOG Daily Brief for January 23, 2026.

Today in U.S. and world news, President Trump’s handling of immigration is under scrutiny, with 6 in 10 Americans now disapproving, even as voters credit him for border security. Jack Smith has publicly affirmed having enough evidence to charge the President for his actions surrounding the 2020 election. Meanwhile, Rahm Emanuel advises Democrats to admit past mistakes and refocus on economic issues like healthcare, education, and housing for future electoral success. The Supreme Court appears wary of President Trump’s attempt to remove a Federal Reserve Board member, citing the central bank’s importance. On the world stage, the President’s second term has seen a new willingness to challenge international norms and agreements, with his recent focus on Greenland shaking the NATO alliance to its core. Internationally, Syria’s army is advancing, demanding the U.S.-backed Kurdish SDF integrate into the national army, threatening Kurdish autonomy as the U.S. supports a unified Syria. In Gaza, the harsh winter is taking a devastating toll on displaced Palestinians in flimsy tents, while disagreements over Greenland at Davos have led to a significant loss of trust, potentially weakening NATO fatally.

In FaithNews, we’re looking ahead to a Black History Celebration set for February 4th, with recent commemorations for “Religious Freedom Day.” Leaders have reacted to the controversial storming of a church in Minnesota by ICE protestors, and the new General Assembly website, GA26.org, has officially launched.

For prophecy news, a House panel, with some Democratic support, has approved contempt of Congress resolutions against former President Clinton and Hillary Clinton for their refusal to appear in an investigation into a sex offender. The issue of global warming is reported to have “gone cold” as a voter priority, despite past predictions, with President Trump’s climate stance seemingly unpunished. Republicans are also probing evidence of a “Blue State Election Scheme” involving Minnesota’s Somali immigrant welfare fraud, suspecting it’s a larger Democratic effort to use illegal immigrants for political advantage. Lastly, NASA’s Artemis II Moon rocket and Orion spacecraft are now en route to the launch pad, preparing for their journey around the Moon.

Finally, in Jewish history, looking back to January 24th, 41 AD, we find the dramatic assassination of the Roman Emperor Caligula. At midday, while leaving a performance with Herod Agrippa, Caligula was struck down by a Praetorian tribune. He was reportedly a “certifiable nut case” who murdered family members, engaged in incestuous relationships, and even planned to name his favorite horse a Counsel of Rome. Caligula believed himself a divinity and demanded public worship. This event certainly marked a turbulent moment for the Roman Empire and had implications for the Jewish community, including a delegation of Jews from Alexandria who had interactions with him.
