If you rely on the Bible as your sole source of morality, how do you know slavery is wrong?

I will address your question later, but it made me wonder: what other “source” of morality is there? Popular opinion? Majority rules? Might makes right?
How, exactly, do YOU figure out what is or is not moral?

Slavery in the Bible was not buying and selling people against their will. It was a voluntary way of people repaying a debt.

How can anyone possibly justify forcing a rape victim to marry their attacker?

Slavery during the Ancient Hebrew societies were COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than recent history. They cannot be compared. Nor can indentured servitude.

Biblical slavery was just working for someone to pay off a debt. Kind of like we do now. God condemned the type of slavery we had in the U.S.A.

God never tolerated slavery or rape. You will never see one scripture where God tolerated it.
The religious leaders put into place laws to deal with different situations in society. When ever God specifically imposed a law or commandment it is stated in scripture.

Yes the Bible the word of God alone is the source of morality, through the Bible too I’ve learned that slavey is bad/wrong…when you truly follow Christ,you value people like Christ treat you.. Christ said love your neighbor as you love yourself….

Because the slavery that the Bible condones only lasts for 7 years, and is only a consequence of debt or crimes.

What kind of god would allow a man to sell his daughter as a slave?
I can easily make an argument Exodus 21 7:11 is a sex slave transaction.“When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl’s owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT)

I would also like to remind everybody that slavery is not exclusive to Biblical times. It was only 150 years ago that we abolished Christian slavery in America.

Servants were not slaves , Hebrews kept servants 7 years.

I don’t care if any of you think these laws apply to you or not, it’s it’s in your Bible, and the same God you worship.
Exodus 21:20–21
20 “When a man strikes his slave, male or female, with a rod and the slave dies under his hand, he shall be avenged. 21 But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money. -

Thats such a weak argument. You can’t possibly be trying to compare the freedom we have today to the brutalities of slavery in the past. That’s marginalizing it to say the least.

You would think that Jesus and the New Testament would have a different view of slavery, but slavery is still approved of in the New Testament, as the following passages show.
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)
Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)
In the following parable, Jesus clearly approves of beating slaves even if they didn’t know they were doing anything wrong.
The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it. “But people who are not aware that they are doing wrong will be punished only lightly. Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given.” (Luke 12:47-48 NLT)

The South used verses from the New Testament to justify slavery. They told the North they were fighting against God’s word. But still, 360,000 men from the north fought and died to abolish slavery, because it was the right thing to do.

See, they went and found alllll these scriptures because they read the Bible irreverently, plus the parents were heathens so they weren’t raised in the word. The totally disregard anything CHRIST SAYS. There is NOTHING IN CHRIST THAT LEADS TO THE ENSLAVEMENT OF PEOPLE.?

The Bible forbids kidnap slavery. Biblically approved slavery was for prisoners, to repay debts, as a form of apprenticeship, as a form of welfare, for war crimes, and similar. It was more like indentured servitude then the kidnap slavery of recent history.

Bible slavery was based on economics. People sold themselves when they couldn’t pay off a debt or provide for their families. Racial slavery is wrong- Ex 21:16 ; 1 Tim 1:10

Your right unless the person wants to be a slave and get paid for it. I agree with above post slaves should be treated well

In the days of scripture when a civilization was conquered the people would be taken as slaves. They were fed, housed, and worked. There wasnt any type of social services.without this slavery the people would had probably perished.

Slavery was just as brutal in biblical times as it is today and throughout history. Forced labor, beatings, sex slaves, murder.. To say slave owners were Somehow good Samaritans in biblical times helping people who couldn’t help themselves is a rather naive thought.

Did slavery come before The Fall or after the Fall? What was its objective?
Anything that attempts to deface the Imago Dei in another human being is of the evil one.
Besides, in slavery there are no winners only losers. Both the perpetrator and the victim lose something vital. The victim loses his/her inherent human rights. The perpetrator mars or damages his/her own soul.

To say slavery in biblical times was somehow different from what we know it to be today, and throughout history is just wishful thinking on the part of apologetics.

The question was how do you know slavery is wrong? The answer is, we don’t. -
If there’s no God, then there’s no absolute morality. If there’s no absolute morality, how can you say slavery is wrong???
God meant marriage to be between a man and a woman. In the Bible we see people having multiple wives, David for example. This doesn’t mean that God was ok with it or that He condoned it. But it shows the consequences for going against what God purposed marriage to be.
Slavery was never ok in God’s eyes (slavery the way we see it in our western way of thinking). Also, what do you mean by slavery? Slavery isn’t the same to us as it was to the people of the OT. -
Read Gregory of Nyssa’s argument against slavery, he draws on Romans and Genesis and makes an exegetical argument that slavery was wrong.

I don’t think slavery by itself is wrong. We are all slaves one way or another.
I believe it is the ill treatment of slaves that is wrong.

If you get your morals from the Bible, then how do you know it’s wrong to force family members to eat each other as a form of punishment?

Yahweh asked Moses to take His people out of Egypt, out of slavery.

God also allowed divorce in tbe Old Testament but in the new said it was wrong for any reason other than unfaithfullness and his deciples ask way did Moses allow it then. Jesus said because of the hardness of your hearts. They were so sinful God strove to regulate it instead. Humanity in himself is a hopeless cause. But God graciously works his purposes where he will.

God also tells us to observe & respect the laws of the land. But if you’re concerned about slavery, maybe take a look at the millions of blacks that are in slavery today by Muslims

Because God never commanded us to have slaves…… He did regulate it for reasons He knows. But also slavery at that time was a way of survival for many.
We still have slavery today. They were paid with food, we get paid with currency. And of course there is still unbiblical slavery going on to this day as well.
