Luke 23:39-43 NASB
[39] One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!” [40] But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? [41] And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” [42] And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” [43] And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”

    I’ve been saying this for a long time in the face of those who refuse to see that water baptism is NOT required, but is also not to be perceived as casually discouraged or dismissed.

    A water baptism is not required to be a follow of Christ it is simply a public declaration of your faith.

    19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,. It has never said anything about baptism being the point were faith begins. There are many examples of Jesus calling people saved but not demanding them to get baptized.

    Sacraments are a means of grace,God works through these means, to reject God’s gifts us problematic …..yes God can work any way He choses…but why would one reject something that helps us???

    The “good news” IS that Jesus died to pay iur sin debt. Had He not sbmitted to crucifixion, no one could be saved.

    He was saved as Abraham was under the Old Covenant. Christ had not yet died and resurrected. There are no examples of post resurrection believers who did not go on to baptism.

    Simply looking does not save you. The other thief also looked to Jesus, but mocked Him.
    His example should not give us excuses not to be baptized, either, even though it is not required for salvation. Water baptism is first step toward life of obedience to Christ.

    Every person that was saved in the New Testament was baptized. We are under Jesuses New Testament covenant. Not Moses law.

    “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven.” Matthew 10:32.

    The thief acknowledged Jesus to the other man hanging on a cross. If God’s grace is not large enough to catch this dying man, the rest of us are without hope.

    We do not know that the thief had not been baptized. The Bible does not say. But it’s just as possible that he was baptized. Your just assuming he wasn’t.

    Baptism by immersion neither saves nor heals.What saves is when you receive Christ by believing in the death,burial and resurrection.Its a gift devoid of performance.You don’t work for gift but you receive gift.What you are paid for is wage and it because you work for it.

    Jesus has all authority to say to the theif today you will be with me in paradise.

    All the other thousands of people that became christians in the book of Acts had baptism in the equation.

    Except the 12 Apostles. Perhaps they were all baptized, but isn’t it fascinating that the Holy Spirit, who inspired all scripture to be for our example and teaching, who preserved it for all generations, didn’t give account for something supposedly required, for not 1….. not 5…not 10…but 12 of the closest friends of the Lord, the 12 pillars of the church, who’s 12 names will be on the wall of the new Heavenly City, Rev21, and gives no account of 12 baptisms to fulfill requirement? Wow what a blunder?

    Well it’s perfectly understandable his position was not for being baptized . The real question is on what basis do people in perfect health and liberty refuse to baptize ? They are not being crucified so what’s their excuse? If they appeal to the thief in the cross example to avoid baptize then are they willing going to the cross first too?

    Who else would you like to cite under the Law that was also saved without the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is “the power of God unto salvation?” And how much of New Testament doctrine are you actually rejecting about salvation because you want to assert that salvation under the New Covenant DOES NOT COME BY THE BLOOD ATONEMENT FOR SIN BY JESUS CHRIST?????? How are you planning on getting separated from your sins to escape God’s judgment against sin, since you look to the thief on the cross for an example of New Testament salvation (which it is not!)?

    Do you have to “look” in order to get a “gift”? That must be works salvation, right?

    That pic really tries hard to reduce everything to a “look” while ignoring everything else that happen and all other scriptures that call for more than a “look”.

    There is baptism by water, but there is baptism of blood for martyrs and baptism of desire for those who accept Jesus but through no fault of their own cannot get a water baptism before death.

    Because he had no choice or chance to proclaim Him in public. It is mentioned over and over so if you are not on your death bed and you have the opportunity then it needs to be done not to be saved but to be in obedience and proclaim your devotion to Him.

    Here’s why this is a POOR argument against baptism.

    Baptism is the participation of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. (Rom 6:3-7; Col 2:12)

    It means baptism was not necessary because Jesus had not even died yet!

    However, it required REPENTANCE on his part.

    After the post resurrection, it is required that all christian conversions require REPENTANCE and BAPTISM (to participate in the death of Christ is to spiritually die to self — and thus fulfilling the wages of sin — and so to die means to be justified and to be set free).
    If you are not a converted true Christian, then you are NOT in Christ. Meaning, the salvation brought by the new covenant is not applicable to you regardless of how sincere you feel.
