People are lost if they do not have the gift of the Holy Spirit. Tongues was an indication in the Bible that a person had been baptized with the Holy Spirit by Jesus. People who have the Holy Spirit can tell through the Spirit who has it and who doesn’t have it. My mother would often get the witness that way without them speaking in tongues. In my church if you didn’t receive it when you came to Christ would keep going to the altar until you got it. You had no standing in my church if you didn’t have it. And you couldn’t fool them they would know if you had it or not. I remember as a child when a Baptist preacher came in and testified. Anyone could ask to testify. But when he began to testify it was obvious to them that he didn’t have Holy Spirit. One of the elders stood up. I don’t remember what was said but the Baptist quickly left. If I went to a holiness church now and stood up and testified they would know that I have the Holy Spirit. It’s like a Fire in a persons body. You only really start to understand if you get it.

Speaking in tongues is in the Bible but it is not part of our salvation but it can be part of the believer’s life. According to apostle Paul, that there are tongues of men and of angel and only 2 or three languages of men neither do I understand the tongues of angels but my God understands my groaning and he does understand everything in my heart. 1 Corinthians Chapters 12, 13, and 14 mention this gift. This is beneficial to the believer having this gift and this is the least among the gifts of the Holy Spirit according to Paul.

I believe that all or almost all churches classified as Penticostal believe that the initial evidence of receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. It may well be correct that people believe if one doesn’t speak in tongues one is not saved. However, it is not an accurate understanding of what happened. Nine means of manifesting the presence of holy spirit are available to all who are “born again”. Any individual is able to do one or (sadly) none of them depending upon their believing and perhaps upon what they have been taught.

I think the premise of this question is wrong. I go to a church and am a minister that may be described like this… but really the question should be, “Can a Christian who has never been born again, baptized of water and of the spirit, be saved?”
The Bible indicates that when a believer is born again and receives the Holy Ghost, the “initial” evidence (I say “initial” because it is the FIRST evidence of the Indwelling of the Holy Ghost, not the only evidence that should be in a believers life) of such experience is that he/she will speak in other tongues. (This is different than operating in the “gift of tongues,” this is the “gift of the Holy Ghost” evidenced by other tongues.) This is recorded throughout the book of Acts when believers are filled with God’s spirit. In one place Peter even acknowledges that those believers in that he was preaching to “received the Holy Ghost just as we” when he heard them speak with tongues.
The Stance that we take is that a believer MUST be born again in order to enter the Kingdom of God, and when that process takes place, it will be evident, initially by tongues, and then by fruit of the spirit, discipleship, Holiness of lifestyle, a personal relationship with Christ, etc.
