Someone explain Joel Osteen to me and his misleading theology?

He preaches almost exclusively about gaining wealth and success in this life. This is not what we should make our goal. The goal is to have eternal life where things will be millions times better.

Seems to me, the biggest problem people have with Joel Osteen isn’t about what he says but about what he doesn’t say. He definitely focuses on the blessings & promises in the Bible while not saying much, if anything, about anything else. The Bible verses he quotes are true, they just need balanced with some other verses…

it’s a therapeutic moralistic deistic preaching. it’s his own religion he created. Just happen to share similar terms like “God, bible” but he’s actually talking about a different religion altogether, don’t be deceived.

He doesn’t address sin or repentance. He preaches that God wants everyone to be healthy and wealthy and that we shouldn’t have any hardships in our lives (false Gospel). His wife has said that Jesus was just a man until God touched him (heresy). His house is bigger than most pastors (hypocrite).

It’s always amusing and appalling to see judgement of other pastors. The average church service on Sunday is an hour and half to three hours of which the pastor preaches an average of 25-45 minutes. So for 25-45 minutes a week or 1040 minutes(17.333 hours – 2340 minutes(39 hours) a year. So at best 39 out of 8760 hours a year one man is supposedly misleading thousands of people to hell by your logic. This is the most idiotic thinking ever and why those that claim the Prosperity Gospel is dangerous need a reality check.

Jesus explained what would arise in Mt. 24 …. “Let NO MAN deceive you.” Just because someone/anyone claims to be something, does not mean it is, but rather we are told to test the spirits …. by the Holy Blood of the Lamb and by the Holy Word of the Living God.

The church I got baptized in follows this same corrupted gospel known as prosperity gospel or word of faith movement, and it took me a while thanks to online preachers and apologists, that they were not preaching the message of Jesus Christ, even though they claimed to be. It is very damaging to the christian community. I remember I told my mom last time that this was wrong, and we shouldn’t worship God just for the material blessings we receive and she’s like “why would I worship God then? Just because he created me”.

There is quite a bit I’m the NT about suffering as apart of the Christian life and is actually to be counted as a privilege. Phil 1:29 and Acts 5:41 to name a couple verses. This is completely in opposition to the claims that Joel Osteen makes that God wants us to be healthy and wealthy and prosperous. No, he wants us to have hearts completely devoted to him (Matt 22:37) meaning that the things that mean so much to us in this world and give us fulfillment, we are to lay at the foot of the cross, deny ourselves and follow Him. Matt 16:24-26.

Joel is a motivational speaker not a theologian. His grasp of the Bible let alone the true gospel is tenuous at best. The government really should take away his church’s tax status.

Do a little gospel comparison. Compare his preaching to Billy Grahams preaching. One is about Jesus and his glory …the other is what you can get out of jesus.

I personally dont think he preaches anything false. But he does stay away from the gospel of Jesus and he is careful not to condemn any sin. But I believe he is for the Cause of Christ and speaks truth in his messages.
His preaching is mostly the same message again and agian about finding hope, trusting God, being a person of integrity..
He uses both biblical scriptures as illustration and modern examples. He addresses sin and encouragement to overcome sin, and also our desires and goals we have in our life and this is the focal point everyone has a problem with. I dont knkw why it is wrong to encourage people to desire the blessings of God in all areas of life. Joel talks about goals of moving up at work and goals of being a great employee even when promotions pass you by.
I think most people beleive he teaches a transaction model of christianity. Which promotes increased faith with increased personal gain. Which is a blurry line, because faith and blessing ARE correlated, but we have to be mindful of not placing our desire for blessing above our respect for God. But Joel speaks on this too. Joel understands this.
Because there is a lack of messages given about what it means to be saved by the blood of Christ, I think his ministry only speaks to a select population. As you can see many people completely reject him.
I personally beleive there is a purpose and a function for every part of the body. -

Why bother about Joel Osteen’ theology? It is non of our Business. What we should really do is to reach out to people , evangelize, make them disciple, and teach them all the commandments of the Lord Jesus Christ ( Matthew 28:19,20). If you think Joel O. is erring prove it to his face and tell it to him. It is never worth discussing here I think. Just be a teacher and reach out to others.

I think most people here are hypocrites; why do you wake up every day to go to work? It’s bcos you need money to take yr children to a good school; probably own a car; a company; a good house etc. There are things you can’t ignore in life. Why do you not wake up to go and preach in the streets every day?? Bcos you also need to eat. Jesus in many verses preached about wealth and giving. Paul preached about giving and collected money from churches. Where do you think this money( to give)comes from if someone doesn’t work for it.
If Joel doesn’t preach wat he preaches what else do you think he will preach! Wat if that is his area of comfort and sails through easily.

Joel osteen doesn’t have any strange theology. Problem is believers don’t want to be of help In their own way to the body of Christ.
They’re sick of people who don’t do things like them.
Everybody cannot be evangelists In the body of Christ. Some have been raised to help people succeed in business while presenting Christ to them.
If we all shine excellently in our own calling like Joel, the body of Christ will lack nothing good.

Thanks all for sharing. My wife comes from this kind of background and has recently been listening to a lot of the Osteens and I hear it in the house. I’ve always not liked his way of doing things at and the way he preaches. I think he well disguises how he’s talking to make it sound like it’s from God so putting a finger on the problem can be harder than it seems. Some great things on this post so thanks for sharing!

I have attended Joel Osteen‘s church and services and I have to say I am surprised that he receives so much criticism. At Bible study, Bibles are open and everybody is reading about Jesus. They have great worship with great music. I’ll have to watch the Netflix documentary but from personal experience, I feel like Joel and his church point millions of people to the Bible which is more than any of us are doing ?♀️

He is the anti-Paul and Peter preacher. While they were preaching sacrifice and suffer for the spreading of the gospel, he is preaching prosperity for the believer, you don’t see the world attacking him do you?

As for me is good to be rich but we should not allow it to control us so we can function as Jesus Christ want us to however I never listen to Joel nor read his books but we should know that to be rich is not a sin it can only be a sin if Christ is not involved

It does not matter if you like him or not GOD has allowed him to be in a leadership possession. HOD knows what HE is doing. He still should be honored. Look at the Saul David relationship. I would advise that we leave this topic alone. I am doing so after this post!!
