When you think of Dallas–the Cowboys, Southfork ranch, and big, shiny things paid for with oil money are what usually come to mind. But a closer look reveals something much darker. Easy access to highways and busy commercial trade make the city a…

What a beautiful moment.
My little girl jumps
happily into my arms –
holds me close and whispers in my ear:
“Daddy, you’re fat!”
What do you do in a moment like this?
How do you respond?
For one, you’re a little insecure
about that added weight –
but it’s not like you can just go cry in a corner.
I mean, c’mon man! You’re an adult
with a mortgage! Get a hold of yourself, will ya?
So you do what any respectable,
almost thirty, pot-bellied father of a
beautifully blunt little girl would do.
You pat your belly.
And then she laughs.
And hugs.
And kisses.
And you realize that it’s true:
Sometimes the most beautiful moments
depend not in what someone else does,
or says, but in the reaction that comes from you.
