Why are Catholics more likely to have a lower view of scripture? How do you address this in your outreach to Catholics?

WOAH! You’re in the group to? Hey! I am pretty sure throughout history, they weren’t encouraged to read the scriptures. Scripture was to only be read by the priest while the congregants had a portion of whatever he read. That will produce a lower view of scripture.

Because they have other books that are coming from the Vatican. they rely on those more often than the Bible itself.
-
Because the Catholic Church is the original church that wrote the Bible. They didn’t take to the Reformation nor do they believe in the laities’ ability to handle the scriptures or an authority besides the Church. I’ve focused on areas of agreement and learning from each other. Many Catholics are saved and have a deep inner life that can be learned from. Those that aren’t often don’t know as much about their Catholic faith which can be used in evangelism. Mutuality in relationship is good until you see what they know and then study up on areas if agreement.

To the OP: why do you think that?
-
Coming from a background, it’s based on tradition. Many practice and have no idea why. Their “why” is because my grandma/mom have always taught me. Also, when you show them scripture out of their own translation they will be opened to a moment of reality of what scripture says..
Gotta give it to them though, their systematic way of teaching is by far the best. Everyone since birth are taught to recite a “prayer” and no matter in what nation, anybody can say it. While other “denominations” struggle to even agree on who’s God.
(Hispanic Catholic background btw) -
The Catholic Church gives equal weight to scripture and tradition.
It is when the question arises as to how to settle a dispute when scripture and tradition do not align, that we see the problem.
There must be a final authority.
The early church oversaw the compiling of the New Testament, just as the Scribes of Israel oversaw the compiling of the Old Testament, but the Catholic church did NOT write the Bible.
Almighty God authored both the Old Testament and the New Testament, and Scripture IS the authority against which all tradition must be measured.
Otherwise false teachings have room to grow.

Very arrogant of you to believe you need to “reach out” to catholics – you have it backwards – catholics need to reach out to you and help bring you home!
-
they are in idolatry.
-
preach the gospel of Jesus.Preach against the prayers to Mary and the infallibility of the pope. Only one mediator between man and God and He is Jesus Christ.
-
They see tradition as being virtually equal with the Scriptures.
-
Because if they go deep to the Scriptures they would get the truth. And thats what they fear.
-
Don’t reason with them with your views and opinion. Share the Word of God for it is the Holy Spirit that will convict and teach the Word to their understanding.m
-
I think cuz scripture has been so abused by modern protestants, they are conceived sola scriptura is not the answer.
-
Aside of them having their own bible, making the bible lose its effectiveness, they just read it plainly and explain it plainly. ??♂️

Am speaking as a Catholic.
No, not lower view of scripture. All scripture has been scrutinized by the Magisterium. Thus we have already a 3 year cycle pattern of Bible verses to study. We read only what’s for the day and mull on it, grow from it. . We are not encouraged to dialogue with separated church members not unless we are equipped enough as members of catholic faith defenders.
We don’t have to debate scriptures among ourselves because there is a 2000 yo system of faith that works. The Central authority works to smoothen our faith.
Exegetes has sieved through our doctrine several hundred times and even batteries of protestant theologists find it hard to refute.
Debates no longer take our time, there are other matters need learning.

Bible alone
-
One would have to show me evidence of this supposed low view of scripture for me to speak on the matter.
-
A lot of their practices is not in the Bible so you cannot expect them to have a high view of scriptures, like Protestants who have a high view of scripture.
-
let’s look at the fruits of the Spirit. Millions of Orthodox and Catholics died for their faith before Luther was even a twinkle in his father’s eye.
-
The truth is this set of people can never listen to any doctrinal defense.
Except, Supernatural influence {signs and wonder}.
Then that will humble them to listen to The Gospel according to this
??
Dear friends, let me give you clearly the heart of the gospel that I’ve preached to you—the good news that you have heartily received and on which you stand. For it is through the revelation of the gospel that you are being saved, if you fasten your life firmly to the message I’ve taught you, unless you have believed in vain. For I have shared with you what I have received and what is of utmost importance: The Messiah died for our sins, fulfilling the prophecies of the Scriptures. He was buried in a tomb and was raised from the dead after three days, as foretold in the Scriptures. Then he appeared to Peter the Rock and to the twelve apostles. He also appeared to more than five hundred of his followers at the same time, most of whom are still alive as I write this, though a few have passed away. Then he appeared to Jacob and to all the apostles. Last of all he appeared in front of me, like one born prematurely, ripped from the womb.
1 Corinthians 15:1-8 TPTExcept the catholic see sign and wonder. No doctrinal persuasion can change them from what they have been wrongly indoctrinated.
They will rather stay with futility arguments than submit to the Gospel of Christ which is the power of God unto Salvation.
That’s why many of them is yet to be saved.

Read them the Bible or ask questions that they should support by Biblical verse.
I grew as a Roman Catholic and the church service every Sunday at most is an hour. During that time, we listen the liturgical mass according to a calendar issued by Vatican. People are not allowed to ask questions only to respond. We pray a lot to many people like Mary, Saints thru devotions, novena and rosary. Charismatic group does bible discussion but we are not required or so much encourage to have the will to attend.

The Catholics read the Scriptures out loud at Church and there is only time for short homily (Man’s opinions) whereas the Protestants quote a small piece of Scripture and spend an hour telling everyone what it really means (man’s opinions).
Sola Scriptura = let me tell you what it means.
By the way the Bible leads me to the Catholic Church. I am doing what it says.

Great post!
-
I was talking with a coworker who’s catholic and his position was that he loves the scripture and holds it in high esteem. However, he believes you can only look at it through tradition. So, for him, tradition is the infallible interpreter of scripture.
-
Because if they had a higher view of scripture they would be Protestants.
-
We don’t idolize scripture. We accept what scripture says in that the Church upholds the truth. We reject the man made tradition of Sola Scriptura.
-
One of the many reasons why I left the Catholic Church. You are not allowed to read the Bible or scripture yourself. Only the Priest could read it, and then give you his ‘interpretation ‘.
There is no personal relationship with God within that church. Too many ‘Chiefs’……….
-
The best way to reach Catholics is to present truth of the gospel like what Jesus did to Pharisees who based their faith in Moses’s law…and also pray for them by loving them. Doing that leave the work of the Holy Spirit to convince them the gospel truth in the Bible…..
-
RC’s don’t view scripture as their standard of Truth.
They are actually Humanists and not Christ followers. -
How can an organization claim to have compiled the Bible when the 4 Great Uncial Codices were already present at the time of the early churches? Even more a false church who does not recognize Scripture’s supreme authority over tradition.
Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus, Codex Alexandrinus, and Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus were written by early scribes all in GREEK, not Latin.
It was the early scribes who compiled the Bible along with the Jewish records of the OT, not the RCC. Another one to add to the pile of lies.
-
Because they don’t know the Scriptures however the rest of Christianity isn’t much better
-
They aren’t taught to read the Bible for themselves
-
I would respectfully submit for your consideration that your premise is incorrect about the Catholic Church and scripture. For an accurate view of what we perceive about the sacred Scriptures I would suggest reading the apostolic constitution document Dei Verbum. In my personal experience since becoming a Catholic my view of scripture has only increased and every Sunday mass there is a minimum of four scripture passages read.
-
Because the church is the authority over scripture
-
We all need to read and study the Bible! Keep our traditions aside!
-
they Not lower view of Scripture but they Add to Scripture mean their book of theirs called Apocrypha, Just Mentioning
-
They repudiate scripture in favor of church tradition and the writings of the church fathers.
-
I think it’s because the pope Francis, blasphemer and false prophet, undermines the Bible very often and He is the head of Catholic Church. Maybe that is why. Here one example.
-
Because Catholicism stems from witchcraft
-
This is from apostolic constitution document Dei Verbum published in 1965. —23. The bride of the incarnate Word, the Church taught by the Holy Spirit, is concerned to move ahead toward a deeper understanding of the Sacred Scriptures so that she may increasingly feed her sons with the divine words. Therefore, she also encourages the study of the holy Fathers of both East and West and of sacred liturgies. Catholic exegetes then and other students of sacred theology, working diligently together and using appropriate means, should devote their energies, under the watchful care of the sacred teaching office of the Church, to an exploration and exposition of the divine writings. This should be so done that as many ministers of the divine word as possible will be able effectively to provide the nourishment of the Scriptures for the people of God, to enlighten their minds, strengthen their wills, and set men’s hearts on fire with the love of God. (1) The sacred synod encourages the sons of the Church and Biblical scholars to continue energetically, following the mind of the Church, with the work they have so well begun, with a constant renewal of vigor.

The Catholic church is heavily indoctrinated based on tradition. If you notice, the Catechisms they read dont match the bible. The big problem with false religions is they always have extra “scriptures” to go along with the real scriptures. It makes for a very confusing situation for a catholic. Not to mention all the extra books the catholic bibles have. The so called “lost books of the bible” which were actually written by Gnostics. Think about it; if you are a confused catholic that has questions about the bible vs catechism, you ask the priest. He tells you that the bible doesn’t actually mean what it says and that the catechism is right. You go on your way trusting what the priest says and remain a catholic, or you become a bible believing Christian and leave the catholic church.

Well see it all started with this thing called indulgences…
