I am very leery of those who say they received…

I am very leery of those who say they received a message from God. That said, let me ask: does the Lord guide or lead us in any way other than His written word. Since He puts His Spirit within us, does the Spirit guide us into His will for us? For example, how does one come to understand that God is calling them to be a missionary, or preacher, etc.?
