Are cherubim and seraphim imaginary or are they real? The reason I ask this is because I was listening to William Lane Craig talk about it and he was saying how they were not to be taken literal.
Here is the recent interview with William Lane Craig last week and if you start the video at 27:45 minutes in he starts talking about it.

Aren’t they specifically referred to in the bible. Aren’t we supposed to accept the bible as infallible and inspired text?
So, Dr Craig says that the reason Cherubim are considered mythological is because
1. The ancient Israelites were not permitted to cast images of heavenly creatures; and
2. The statues of the “angelic beings” on the ark of the covenant were permitted because they DO NOT represent heavenly beings.
Interesting.
3. IF there are indeed graven images, or statues of such things found in the ancient Hebrew Scriptures, then these were either taken from the Mesopotamian cultures around them (and such composites are part of their mythologies), and which pre-date the Israelite culture, or else they are images of created things, such as calves or serpents on a stick.

Yes they are real The Word Of God tells us that. Seraphim-Isaiah 6:2-6
Cherubim (also called cherubs) are revealed as powerful guards or attendants to the divine throne. God placed cherubims and a flaming sword at the garden of Eden to guard the way of the tree of life (Genesis 3:24). In the tabernacle and also the temple, gold cherubim on the mercy seat signified the presence of God (Exodus 37:7-9; Numbers 7:89; Psalm 80:1).
Lame Craig is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
He denies a six day creation and global flood.
I understand from my pastor that they are spiritual beings (some class of angels) depicted with protective purposes. Like in China, they have the stone lions and in Egypt, the sphinx?
Of course being a Christian, the seraphim and cherubim are real and powerful beings.
Ezekiel 28:14 talks about an anointed cherub; as for the 6-day creation, duration of a day is not an issue, I think; the issue is duration of a second, because the speed of light is not a constant
They are very real
I was thinking more about this and have come to two different ideas.
1) William Lane Craig is correct in that these were imaginary which is why they did not violate the OT law.
2) They were real and the people were simply disobeying the law about the graven images. I think we just assume that the church was doing everything right which would automatically make it seem as if the images were fake, but we know today there are things that the Christian’s/Church do that are in violation of.
It seems to me that WLC is just assuming that they were obeying God in the holy of holies and the not making of any graven images.
Therefore it would solve this issue because you could likewise assume the opposite and thus solve the dilema and conclude they are real.
Either way I don’t think we would have any sort of definitive answer because we simply do not know, but it doesn’t seem like it would cause any issue for believing in a Young Earth or many of the things WLC objects to.
Is God imaginary or real?
Angels are real, they are divided according to their legions, Types, and levels.
Ask William Lane Craig what was on top of the Ark of the testimony, the Ark of God if the cherubim were make-believe!
Strange that Craig would say that. Satan is described as a cherub.
They are both imaginary and real. Not everyone can see them so you have to imagine what they look like. For those who can see them they see them. For instance, I can’t see a virus but I imagine what they look like. A scientist with a microscope does not have to imagine for he is equipped with the tools to see a virus.
