I believe this is an important message for all to hear, or to at least give sincere consideration. A book entitled, “TENSIONS WITHIN THE CONNECTION” written in the mid 1980s dealt with current issues within the United Methodist Church. A strange scenario I discovered while reading the book was the tremendous resembles to the issues that directly related to the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) at the time. Today there remains a generation who was basically physically “born” in the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) or at least raised in it since a child. And another generation has done the same. However, between the two, there is a major divide regarding the Church of God. I have come to the conclusion that when the two separate groups have discussion, it concludes in total division because one or the other must comprise their belief system, which is something that neither can or will do. The bottom line is, the division between the two groups goes directly to the Doctrine of Sanctification. For a vast number of years, Sanctification as a second, definite work of grace (which was the official doctrine of the Church of God of Cleveland, TN) was not taught in our Bible colleges. If anything, the opposite view of the CoG was promoted at Lee College in the early 1970s (Dr Donald Bowdle’s book, REDEMPTION, ACCOMPLISHED AND APPLIED) and with his book, further advocated in our local churches. Dr. Paul L Walker, General Overseer of the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) in reference to Sanctification states, “We have not preached Sanctification from our pulpits for 25 years.” Church of God Ordained Bishop minister, Rev James P Bowers states, “Confusion about Sanctification and a desire to avoid conflict seems to lead many ministers to avoid the subject.” Now I love the Church of God and have many fond memories. And I recognize the fact that there remain many Holy Ghost anointed ministers and laymen within the church. There are also many wonderful local churches as well, and I pray that God blesses everyone of them. In fact, I preach in many Church of Gods across America and have been invited to do so by General Officials of the Church of God. However, the current struggle within the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) regarding the Doctrine of Sanctification will continue on until ultimately the older generation passes off the scene, and then the struggle will end. The reform movement in the latter 1980s known as the BIBLE HOLINESS FELLOWSHIP that consisted of some 650 Church of God Ordained Bishop Ministers who met in Charlotte, NC is no more. Many have simply resigned their ministry in the CoG (Cleveland, TN) and formed independent local Church of Gods. A few have established small organizational structures and have established churches aligned with them. I am currently writing a book on SANCTIFICATION that will be a defense on the Doctrine of “ENTIRE or INSTANTANEOUS or SUBSTANTIATION” SANCTIFICATION. I conclude by stating that JESUS IS COMING SOON, and due to each of our physical ages, TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR US as well. Whatever time we have left, let’s give it all to Jesus. Every dime I raise, every dollar I have, I am going to use it to propagate the full gospel as I believe it to be according to the Holy Scripture. God bless each of you.
