Largest COG General Council says tongues is ‘an evidence’?

I was talking with a COG pastor with a master’s degree in theology who lectures at a large Christian university and one of the top secular universities in theology. He is also a graduate of the GBI Bible College. He said that they had changed the wording and now tongues is seen as an evidence or one of the evidences (‘salah satu’ in Indonesian) of the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

I don’t have the minutes or the members book for the denomination. This was just my understanding of a conversation over lunch.

He is wrong, it is the General Assembly that says that. The General Council, all ordained bishops men, send items to the floor of the General Assembly to be voted by all assembled members.

Why would he be wrong? If I understood him correctly, that was the decision of the ‘sinode’, the general assembly in Indonesia.

Charles Page I have no idea. I’ve never seen or read the international book of minutes. If you had a joint council and could get everyone to actually attend, they’d probably outvote the white voters if they wanted to.

Regeneration is the baptism of the Holy Spirit and it is certainly not evidenced by speaking in tongues.

Tongues are the initial evidence of the infilling/baptism of the Holy Ghost.

Baptizing work of the Holy Spirit is regeneration. Baptism of Christ is the enduement of power for service.
