Statement: Lee University Leadership Commitment to Doctrinal Integrity

Lee University Leadership Commitment to Doctrinal Integrity
March 30, 2021 • Cleveland, Tennessee
Dr. Tim Hill, General Overseer, and the International Executive Committee

In recent days, you may have heard or seen statements concerning a Lee University chapel service where a non-faculty guest speaker addressed sexual orientation, sexual identity, and marriage in a manner contrary to Scripture, teachings, and foundational doctrine of Lee University and its sponsoring denomination, the Church of God.

The International Executive Committee shared their concerns and those of many ministers with President Mark Walker and the leadership of Lee University. At such time, Dr. Walker was already proactively focusing upon the situation.  In cooperation with the Executive Committee, Dr. Walker began immediately to address the issue firmly, providing Biblical correction and doctrinal understanding for the student body of Lee.

Dr. Walker and the Lee University team released a formal statement regarding the presentation and, further, Dr. Walker scheduled the next chapel service to speak with the student body to provide clarity of the Biblical foundation of Lee University and the doctrine upon which the university was founded and built.

During the process, the International Executive Committee maintained regular communications with Dr. Walker.  In addition, Church of God leaders, including the Executive Council and state/regional administrative bishops, were kept informed through an email update and a video conference.

The Executive Committee has and continues to affirm the leadership actions of Dr. Walker and the commitment of Lee University to doctrinal integrity and practice. In addition, in recent days the Board of Directors of Lee University have also affirmed the leadership of Dr. Walker and emphasized the school’s foundational guidance of Biblical principles.

Relevant issues of marriage and sexuality must be predicated upon a sound Biblical perspective and church doctrine.  The beliefs and commitments of the Church of God are our non-negotiables and should be clearly taught based upon the authority of Scripture.

As we move forward, our prayer is that God will continue to strengthen, provide guidance and spiritual direction to President Walker, Lee University, and the Church of God as we fulfill the Great Commission as a church on mission.

STATEMENT OF AFFIRMATION of Church of God Educational Institutions

STATEMENT OF AFFIRMATION

of Church of God Educational Institutions

Background
At the request of the International Executive Committee and the International Executive Council, selected Church of God institutions of higher learning previously submitted detailed and thorough reports addressing their internal finances, academic offerings, fidelity to church and biblical doctrine, and an overview of their faculty’s qualifications.

Each report completely and successfully addressed the prevalent concerns and questions raised about the influence of current culture on our church’s institutions of higher learning.  The reports also confirmed that our traditional biblical values, based upon the authority of Scripture, are non-negotiable and serve as a foundation for instruction and management in each institution.

With the arduous societal challenges of excessive tolerance and rampant compromise, eroding core values, increased secularization, overreaching governmental influence, and even fragmentation within churches and denominations in an ever-changing culture, our church-related institutions must be more committed than ever to Biblical authority, doctrinal integrity, and academic excellence. In response to these influences, our Church of God seminaries, universities, colleges, bible schools, and other educational institutions have accepted the mission and ministry to prepare future generations for Kingdom service in the church, the marketplace, and society as a whole.

Affirmation
The executive leadership of the Church of God affirms, honors, and congratulates our church-related institutions of higher education for their commitment to our movement’s doctrine and polity, fiduciary responsibilities, and faithful fidelity to their mission, vision, and values. With profound appreciation, the church’s leadership offers affirmation to the presidents, board members, administration, faculty, and staff of these institutions for their steadfast commitment to education that embraces biblical values and faithful adherence to the Church of God Declaration of Faith, as well as to our doctrine and polity.

The Church of God is extremely grateful to our higher educational leadership, faculty and staff that continue to navigate the multiple challenges of our times with great wisdom, unwavering devotion to Scripture, and sensitivity to the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit. We are truly united as the Church on Mission!

Statement: Roe v. Wade Overturned

View this email in your browser

Roe v. Wade Overturned

Cleveland, TN: In one of the most highly anticipated decisions in decades, the United States Supreme Court today overruled the 1973 Roe v. Wade case that has provided a constitutionally protected right to an abortion for almost 50 years. The Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization now allows the legality of abortion to be determined by each state.

In recognizing this momentous decision for human life, Dr. Timothy M. Hill, General Overseer of the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), issued the following statement:

“The body of Christ rejoices today with the release of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade. For some five decades, the church has prayed for this day to come. Millions and millions of babies have suffered the consequences of this senseless and inhuman decision. Finally, the Supreme Court has brought some reason into this ungodly and evil world that we call home.

When the Roe decision was handed down on January 22, 1973, the people of God, for the most part, stood silently by, not realizing that the Court of that day had created a constitutional right not recognized for hundreds of years before. As the moral and social consequences of abortion became more and more known in the years that followed, believers began to voice their concerns and opposition to the Court-created right to an abortion. But thanks to the grace and mercy of God, this egregious wrong perpetrated on our country has come to an end today.

However, the battle is not over. The fight for life now moves from the courts to the state legislative bodies across this country. I have been told that approximately half of the states have laws in place or readily available to greatly reduce or basically outlaw abortions all together. On the other hand, a good number of states have laws that would preserve the right to an abortion, even late-term abortions.

If we are going to be a life-giving and caring church, now is the time that we must step up and provide support to the more than 2,500 pregnancy resource centers across America, nonprofit facilities that provide assistance to women with unplanned pregnancies. Every one of the babies that will be saved by today’s Supreme Court decision is a creation of our almighty God. Jeremiah 1:5 clearly tells us that ‘before I formed you in the womb I knew you.’ Even as we applaud today’s decision, we must never stop fighting for life!!”
