This is very well said. I’ve learned that apologetics is more useful for teaching believers to be confident in their Christian faith when challenged, than it is for evangelism. Apologetics is not the Gospel.

I’ll add that the worst things one can do is to get defensive, attack the person challenging you, throw in logical fallacies, and be evasive. If you don’t have an answer, it’s not a failure. It’s an opportunity to learn it, then share it.

He made some good points. Peter Kreeft is another Catholic that has written an excellent defense of Chritianity, “Handboek Of Christian Apologetics”.

Apologetics merely tills the soil (mind/heart of people) so the seed (the Gospel) can be planted (through preaching/teaching) with a better opportunity to grow (being watered by the Holy Spirit).

That is why the last part of 1 Peter 3:15 says “yet do it with gentleness and respect.”

This Is relevant to all.. Empathy, common ground.

Defending the faith is a must however, it must be done with love and respect. There is ample proof of biblical truth. But, some have added non-biblical doctrines, against what the Scriptures warn about, at the end of Revelation. They do that at their peril. Either the Bible is true in its’ entirety or not. No one can have it both ways.

Notice that Peter said “…with gentleness and respect.” As with everything, all we need to do is simply follow the text. Apologetics plays an enormous role in my walk with the Lord. I am genuinely grateful for this aspect of revelation.

As we are commanded to “give a defence for the hope that lays within you” we are in error if we do so just to prove a point. Love conquers a multitude of sins. We need to confront, persuade, and win those who are lost in sin. If we have another agenda, we are in error.
